The best pot for metal?

So yeah; Strains? Method of smoking? Is lateralus the best or are we going old school Aenima or maybe even undertow? Are 311 actually the best band ever?

But yeah seriously I'm trying to get new pots for my squier and I'm kinda confuser what taper to go for. I'm a big volume knob fan (tone knob too!) and I want to hear shit get less distorted as I turn down. The thing I think may be a problem taper-wise is that I like ½meg pots for single coils. I just woke up so I cant really think the math but like 8k vs like 14k shouldnt be that big a difference for parallel resistance, right? Also do pots work differently with fuzz cleanup vs cleanup purely through volume? I hate reading about fuzz cleanup it's just a bunch of morons saying you gotta pay up

Here is how I think this works...

The value of the pot shouldn't affect the taper.
The value of the pot will affect the amount of high end in the signal when the pot is wide open. I have 1 meg pots in one guitar and it's awesome. Ice picks for days.

Tone knobs suck so someone else can chime in on them.

You can change the taper wih resistors, that's why am asking.

Tone knobs rule, it's where the TONE comes from

250k are std. for single coils, 500k are brighter and 1meg brighter still. Adding a resistor in series would move the range as well as add brightness, in parallel it should (haven't tried it) do the opposite and darken the output.

Log/audio taper (A) are better for volume pots as they are designed to make the increase/decrease in volume sound more even than a linear taper would (this is down to how the human ear works).

You can use log (A) or lin (B) for tone pots. I've also heard that some people like reverse log (C) for tone but I've never tried them myself.

would a liner taper for tone sound linear? Since you are controlling a filter the exponentiallity of volume shouldn't apply?

it kinda does tho. 500k ~30% log behave subtly but noticeably differently to the equivalent 250k
i just use log all round, vol or tone.

Sorry I misunderstood.

I've tried adjusting the taper with resistors but it just ends up being fucked. I've never actually improved a pot that way.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm just confusing myself, honestly.

In the end coldbrightsunlight has the only true answer

that Columbian they used to sell in the 1970s. all the OG metal heads preferred it because it went well with the downers and Boone's Farm Apple Wine. smoke enough of that shit and you turned into a one-person version of Heavy Metal Parking Lot.{/i]
