Talking About Gear Purchases With the Significant Other

Inspired by a real conversation today:

Dos: "Hey so I bought another pedal because XYZ"
Ms Dos: "...Are you trying to justify this pedal? You don't need to tell me how you spend your money."
Dos: "No, I just like talking about it"

Post your entirely reasonable interactions with your partner about buying gear here, because it doesn't seem to be that fucking hard.

My fiancee will ask me fairly regularly if I have anything new or am looking at buying anything new. Not in a judgemental kind of way, but just because she knows I like talking about music stuff and she indulges me even though she rarely knows what I'm talking about.

Lately, I've been telling her about the Revelation Marrakesh that I am hoping to buy when it comes back in stock at a local shop. She usually just responds with "oh the Gizzard Wizard Lizard guitar? Hopefully, you can try it soon and you like it."

Her: "I see there's a package from Sweetwater."
Me: "Since we're getting divorced, you don't have to worry about it."
Her: "Fair enough."

Admittedly, this only took place in my head, but still, it was nice to contemplate.

Her: "Package came today... again."
Me: "Yeah, thats probably XYZ I ordered!"
Her: "Can you at least tell me if something is due to arrive? I had to get it in my pyjamas again, I wasn't even wearing a bra..."
Me: "Ok."

Yeah... adulting is.. fun?

Initially I think my girlfriend was worried after we moved in together and she witnessed the pedal pile multiplying but now she just asks lots of questions about them because she knows they keep me sane.

She is getting savvy though and will say things like "another HM-2 clone?? you haven't gotten a delay in awhile..." so there has developed this mix of judging and also enabling I guess?

My SO is a scientist who rides horses. Basically we talk gibberish back at each other.

She likes the music but I can always tell when she has no clue what I'm talking about and I think she has become adept at registering my vacant look too.

Her: "Can't you just buy the pretty sounding ones?"
Me: *beholds oscillating fuzz* "this sounds pretty"

Basically, modulation, delays and reverb are OK, fuzz all sounds the same and she doesn't approve of those. She mainly listens to EDM. :idk:

My best friend is really bad with money and impulse purchases so he always rings me up before buying gear to be the voice of reason, I'm starting to worry he is my significant other...

To clarify, we are in fact getting divorced, and financial issues are part of it, but this particular conversation is still, for the time being, internal.

I am astonished and deeply envious of those of you who have SOs that at least feign an interest.

I was unsure how much of the post was internal. Regardless, how you're alright mate

My last partner was a gear conservative bassist. Set with one bass, one amp, and a couple pedals. We met when we played a house show together in her basement, were together for over a year or so, lived together for about 9 months. Anyways, we never really talked much about gear unless I was making cool sounds with it or if she had questions about her own gear. It was my first living partnership where I didn't feel suffocated creatively. If you can pay the bills it really doesn't matter. I don't know if I could ever go back to being in a relationship where purchases are watched closely. Seems like a subtle way to have control over something that doesn't really concern you and that from my experience is not healthy in a romantic partnership.
