My apologies for a really TGP-ish wank topic, but what the hell.

I’ve thrown this around as a half thought in my head without specific digging back into our past. But it seems there used to be certain frequently seen elements on an ILF’er’s board. Some elements seemed to have a specific time range of commonness, like feedback loopers or PLLs.

Have we diffused in preferences? Or is it total narcissism of small differences with various choices of glitch pedals, super delays, flangers and ring mods?

(I was tossing this around before I heard rumors of BILF.)

I feel like the stereotypical ILF board has a heavy number of pedals from ILF builders, one or two really expensive pedals ($200+ range), and then some cheap stuff (Donner, Mooer, etc.). Also, stickers on pedals. Like, one third from each of those categories and one sticker randomly on a pedal?

But where I don’t hang out on any other forums I don’t really know if any of that’s unique to ILF? It used to be the fuzz of the week or “noise” pedals, but I think fuzz has (sadly) become passè for many and there are more efficient, effective, and interesting ways to make “noise” than with stringed instruments through pedals imo.

This is what I aspire to.

I think it's more of the idea of not needing the normal main 5 pedal types in the standard order to play in a dad-rock cover band

This is usually what comes to mind:

1) Something very expensive and/or unobtainiummed
2) Something very cheap (or workaround thereof)
3) One fuzz ( going out on a limb here! )
4) One pedal (may also be included in the above) with stickers/ILF-in joke etching/artwork/paper mache/Chewbacca/etc.

Olden thymes was like one Dr. Sci, one SS/BS (big enclosured), one Infanem/DE thing, and a Boss device that cost less than $50, give or take?

Nowadays, it's all Death Metals into Buzz Boxes, ring mods & your choice of SPF lotion, all spread out on the floor, daisy chained, & connected to an electric surfboard?

(Or maybe that was coms.act's universe, though )

I don't really see the diff btw a TGP style board & ILF these days, though maybe there's less pedalboard arrangement talk & more serious flippage, so all the pics in the Let's See Your Board thread are outdated immediately

I think something Dr. Scientist has to be on every ILF Board. Back in the day it was 50 shades of dirt, ranging from SSBS, Fuzzhugger, Dwarfcraft to old Muffs.
Now it seems to be mostly Delays with some sort of special trick, glitching about. Also Reverbs and maybe some modulation.

I think this thread has quite nicely captured the various moods and themes throughout the years.

I'm still a fan of the old smorgasboard aesthetic which collects a whole bunch of odd stuff.

This is like Ballards High Rise in pedal format.

Top floors: CT5 and the granular reverbs

Middle floors: “The Elements”

Bottom floors: Death Metal and Buzz Box

There was a time period where one also had to defend any weird choices. “Oh, this Fulltone big box drive was the first overdrive that sounded good into my amp, but I still use plenty of fuzzes — I have 5 of them on my board.” Etc.

Looking at the pedalboards thread now, I’d say the average rig is $1-2k USD more on average than it used to be, counting amps. Those little $300 and $400 pedals add up quick.

For the longest time I couldn’t afford much because my income was low and guitar was always a hobby, so a lot of the early unobtanium stuff was out of my reach. That said, I was always excited when I saved up for and bought something like an Algal Bloom for the first time, or when I commissioned a pedal from skullservant or someone else.

For sure. This has been a pretty common theme I've noticed. And like you, it's happened to me too because I have more money so why not.
