Irresponsible Stimulus Money Spending

I’m fortunate enough to be in a place where I don’t have to spend my stimulus money on bills. So, I’m planning on buying something dumb and expensive. So far, the biggest contenders for my money are the Solar 50 or a two tier 60hp Moog setup (a mother 32 and an empty row with power to start building).

What are your dumb stimulus purchases going to be?

Hopefully a baritone. As much as I love offset guitars, that Gretsch Jet Bari with the Bigsby looks pretty sweet for 600 bucks.

I irresponsibly bought an Akai MPK Mini. It's pretty rad.
...then I bought a non-running 27-year-old truck, a camper shell for said truck, various items to get it running again, and a couple hundred dollars in carnivorous plants and their supplies

This sounds like a highly efficient use of that money! What kind of stuff is involved with getting plants like that?

Until I actually researched it, I always thought that they were really difficult to grow but now I think that was just internet people killing their plants because of a lack of information. The book The Savage Garden has been a really helpful resource for this.

Basically, since many of the varieties are found in shitty, bog-like, nutrient-deficient soil, which is why they evolved to eat things, you need to replicate those conditions. It seems that a lot of varieties can be planted in sphagnum peat moss mixed with clean sand or perlite. The soil needs to be constantly wet but also requires good drainage, so a way of achieving that easily is to put the pots in a tray of shallow water. Don't use fertilized soil 'cause the nutrient buildup will kill them. However, the leaves can safely be sprayed with specific fertilizers like Maxsea twice a month.

Also, use distilled water, reverse-osmosis water, or rainwater. Not tap water.

They don't need extremely high humidity (but do appreciate humidity) and don't belong indoors in a small enclosed decorative terrarium like you see in ads. They'll rot and die. They can be kept in roomier terrariums if there's good ventilation, but if your house is near a coastline they should be humid enough without anything. Really they're best kept outside because they generally need a lot of sunlight, all day long. You can grow them on a windowsill if it gets all day sun, otherwise grow lights are needed.

If kept outdoors they will feed themselves, no problem. Indoors, you actually don't really need to feed them more than once every week or two if conditions are good. Food size depends on the plant, but for something like a flytrap you could get some mealworms from a pet store to drop in there. The plants that actively move their traps to catch prey use a lot of energy to do so, so don't fuck with them unless you're actually feeding them. Even though it's cool looking

Some plants require a period of dormancy during the winter or summer months, so you have to account for that if grown indoors.

There are lots of wildly different plants but this is what seems to be necessary in general and for the more common ones. There are many online nurseries you can order em from, but I went with California Carnivores 'cause they seem to be the most informative and they will ship plants potted instead of bare root. I'll post pics when I get the rest of the dudes all set up :idk:

I didn't get one in the UK and I've been at it.

Though there are some very real savings on commuting now I'm wfh. 100-200 miles driving per week to like, 5.
