Hey guys and gals, here I am, the guy who post the same thread like 2 times a year cause I still am totally lost in this world. Been doin the whole electronic music thing again and am super frustrated with all the options for sampling. I’ve read a ton and at the end of the day I have no idea what I need/want to accomplish.

Here’s my current setup
Novation circuit
Korg minilogue
Volca fm
Volca sample
Teenage engineering po33 and po12

I’m still in the same boat of looking for a proper sampler. Was dead set and hardware but am now open to anything. Just want to add some of that hip hop vibe to what I’m doin, the typical jdilla/madlib kinda shit.

I’ve had an sp404sx, electribe sample, and a microgranny and was never able to bond with any of them (404 was right but that sequencer was garbage and they are way overpriced).

As for daw I’m using either ableton lite or protools. I am really diggin ableton but I’m too poor for the real deal.

So That’s where I’m at. Don’t wanna spend a ton and I’m willing to trade/sell some of these for the right piece of kit but am too overwhelmed with all the options. If anyone can point me in a direction that would be dope.

what are you after? just a sampler or an mpc type deal? I think alot of the dilla vibe is the sequencer/quantizing/whatever so why not look into getting an mpc? they can do alot of sequencing and you can play fat s-series multi layer samples on them etc. I think the boss sp555 is supposed to be an underrated sampler they used in that late 90s early 2000s hip hop scene that had some weird "drunk" quantizing (mf doom used on i think).

I'm really more into the rackmount stuff tho, i was about to get an emulator 4 but found a deal on a k2000 instead, they have a really special sound idk if its hip hoppy but im more after a jungle/industrial/darkwave vibe. The akai rack stuff is awesome btw (except for the s2000), real workhorses that you can find for pretty decent money really often. boss keyboard samplers are supposed to be pretty awesome too.

Software-wise I like renoise alot, awesome sampler with tons of fun stuff. I'd go insane trying to make something funky in it. Not saying its impossible tho, there is probably a tool for that even

I was thinking about an Mpc, like the 1000 but they are just a bit more thane I’m looking to spend and I’d have to part with a good bit of gear to scoop one. Also looking at mpc studio? I feel like a lot of these would make my novation unnecessary. Like if I can use it as a hub which is kinda what I’m doing with my circuit that’d be cool. Also if there is a cool sampler that I can sequence with my novation I’d be jnto that. I feel like I’ve spent the past month and a half reading about every piece of kit available and I have no idea what I need anymore. I’ll
Look at the sp555 again and see what the scoop is. Any recommendations for software samplers is cool too. I’d be willing to part with both volcas or the circuit but I want to hold into some of it for the options of having two synths, really like having a few pieces of gear on the desk to play with.

Gotta check out renoise too, maybe that with a decent midi controller? Any recommendations for a controller that’s cheap would be tight too. At 75 plus a cheap
Controller i could prob swing that and hold onto my other gear

Elektron Model:Samples seems like the obvious cheap, modern sampler option with good sequencing and immediacy. Seems like it could replace your Volca Sample and Pocket Operators and still give you more. And it’s a lot easier to jam on with velocity sensitive pads that you can actually play.

I don't know if the pandemic has affect prices much, but I was seeing MPC-2000 and 2000xl surfacing for pretty low money now and then. I will admit tripping over one for $300 is a rare event.. but it's worth plugging into the radar if you're happy playing the long game. I'm still delighted with mine (purchased new almost two decades ago).

Another device I'd like to try out is the Roland MV-8000 or 8800.

An intuitive sequencer paired up with anything is also an option. I think beat work really boils down to the sequencer and how the interface integrates with your work flow.

Yeah I don't think this existed the last time you posted the thread but now it looks like the obvious hardware choice if you're looking to not spend too much?

I feel like the model samplesIs Really a big boi version of the volca and wouldn’t add much to my setup. The fact that it can’t record samples on its own kinda sucks to me. I wrote that off a while ask but I’ll check it out again. I also find the rack stuff pretty intimidating as well as lost the older gear with the old file formats and what not.

Are there any table samplers that you can go outside and use and mix on the fly after recorded? Meaning manipulate the recorded sounds with effects? Time stretching, pitch shifting...you know. The good stuff.

In my experience time stretching is something you can "bake in" to a sample, it's tricky to get on the fly (that said, part of the reason I'm interested in the Roland units I mentioned above is that I recall watching someone essentially size and pitch a section of music to fit another section of music in a very fluid manner). With the relatively primitive stuff I'm used to it is definitely possible to stretch something and then replay it at another speed, but it is far from a real time performance function.

Mind you, I have absolutely no experience with samplers that are not close to or beyond beer buying age. So consider my suggestions partial at best, hahaha.

Yes, it’s kind of like a big boy Volca Sample but you gain a lot of sequencing power. You can do more off the grid J Dilla beats by pushing notes between steps. Building up patterns and arranging them should also be easier. I never liked how pattern chaining was done on the Volca.

Anyone have any opinions on mpc studio? May try that and use it as a hub as well

little thing I've learned is if you have sample tuning and a pitch shifter effect, that is a crude timestretcher... you can at least audition what it might go like because non real time timestretcher on MPC/akai Sseries can take forever to render.

I thought the Model: Samples felt like garbage to use - spongy pads/buttons, the knobs were not very responsive, the screen that has one thing on it was kind of lame.
I like the Volca Sample quite a bit more to be honest
