By no means have I tried every flavor of fuzzzzzz, but I have tried many. I worked my way through many muff variants, decided I hated them because the SSBS MINI is better, then decided I really did love muffs all along after EHX reissued the Soviet tall-font version. I flipped my way through the Devi-verse of fuzz. The only Mellowtone I didn’t try was the WIZARD FOUNTAIN, but I have had every version of the Wolf Computer. The only Dwarfcraft fuzz I haven’t played yet is the NECROMANCER. And I know I’ve tried a fair number of Death By Audio and ZVEX things, too.

However, I find myself wanting some new sounds to play with. What are some that you’d recommend to blow the dust off your neighbor’s shelves? What fuzz made sounds you thought were impossible? Is the DBA Apocalypse worth its salt? Is the new Dr Scientist Frazz Dazzler better than the old version?

The fuzz factory is legendary for a reason. Try any version. It does bender, fuzz face, octave, self-oscillating and much more, and the can be had for cheap.

Bosstone circuits are great for that crusty lower octave thing. Mojo Hand El Guapo for example.

Os mutantes circuits are fun for their nasaly ripping texture - Creepy Fingers Regulus 8, Basic Audio Fuzz Mutant, ?...

Shin-Ei FY-2 clones/variations are great for velcro-y J&MC skree skree.
My favorite all-rounder is the TB MKIV hybrid a la MBV.
The INFANEM 141G gets wild and self-oscillate-y which is pretty bonkers and sure to annoy yr neighbs.

I haven't tried any of the older versions but I love the new frazz! It sounds great and can do a lot from fairly cleaned up fuzz to gnarly velcroish sounding stuff to almost high gain sounds. I like the low end of it a lot with a fairly overdriven type sound that kind of gets heavier with how hard or soft you play. That's my impression anyways. Also I am a huge dr sci fanboi so I run that with the elements and I feel like they cover pretty much any gain sound ever needed.

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned (Shin-Ei FY-2, Frazz Dazzler, Fuzz Factory, etc.). The one that I’ve been playing with a ton recently though is the Fender Blender. I had forgotten how much I love this thing. It sounds absolutely disgusting, but it kills if you want that sound. Here is a quick demo I made and threw up on Instagram:

Rattle Crow, BitQuest and Noise Swash are my three current favourites.

Yeah, check out a bunch of classics and go from there.

try out different fuzz/od combos and find out which of your fussy pedals actually play nicely together!

The Fairfield Circuitry Fuzzes (Unpleasant Surprise and Four Eyes) are kind of out there in a fun way. Definitely worth a try.

The DBA Apocalypse is a lot of fun. Mode three cuts through a mix like a giant ax. I got mine used for a steal though so not sure how worth it is at retail. Would pick one up again if one popped up for a good price.

Yeah the Apocalypse is super fun mode 3 is And the tone control is really good, one of my favourites on any pedal. The range on the volume control is horrible though, unity is like 8-9 o'clock and everything after that is LOUD. Fine if you leave it on but if you're trying to turn it on and off and use with other pedals... Annoying. I think I'd rather find something that did the mode 3 sounds?? But I'd love more fuzzes with that tone control. Actually usable in all settings whereas most fuzz pedals it's just a LPF so I max it out for the brightest possible sound and never touch it again.

ya i got one super cheap that got sold on in times of desperation and i'd really like another.

So in conclusion we all want more cheap DBA Apocalypses not real apocalypses thank you very much?

don't need any DBA Apocalypse, but if it's a valid alternative to the real apocalypse i'd grab two thanks.
