Ty Segall/Fuzz without cranking your amp?

Is it possible to get a similar overdrive and fuzz sound similar to what Ty gets in his solo stuff and Charlie gets with Fuzz without cranking my amp to absurd levels? I really want to record some similar tones, but I'm not able to crank my deluxe reverb where I live and I don't want to spend $1,200+ on something like an OX Amp Top Box Attenuator. Is there a drive pedal or a boost that would work well with a Fuzz War to get that sound? I found this guy who gets pretty close, but he doesn't talk about his amp settings and I'm pretty sure he uses an attenuator in some of his videos.

just get a good, amp-like overdrive pedal. heavy verb too. you won't find a substitute for the FEELING of huge volume but the component parts of that sound are not very complicated.

One of the Catalinbread foundation overdrives? I've only had the SFT/Ampeg one but it sounded really good. The 'stoner' setting might be ideal for Fuzz-style sounds with a Muff or Fuzz War, actually.

Are we talking fuzz into cranked amp or Neil Young crapping out fuzz from a cranked amp? For the former I agree with mechagodzilla just get an ocd, box of rock, od-3, blah blah blah. Tons of great pedals that do that. For the latter: I've heard pretty killer tones like that from the benson overdrive pedal (which is overpriced as fuck but looking at the schematic it shouldnt be hard to get someone to build you one), there is also a pedal by durham electronics called crazy horse meant to emulate that dying amp sound at normal volumes, you can also get sounds like that from a colorsound power boost type pedal if it has a master volume. Probably, you could also get tones like that from the pedals aforementioned too if you crank them, stacked blues drivers is supposed to be a pretty sick amp sound fuzz

I was actually talking about the band Fuzz which is a side project of Ty Segall, but with Charlie Moothart on guitar. It's definitely more of a fuzz into a cranked 4x12 fender reverb or music man 130.

You know, I've been meaning to check out the SFT, but I was worried it might be just a compressed overdrive and not very amp-like. That's my worry with a lot of these overdrive boxes is that they aren't going to sound very natural. A while ago I tried a Wampler '65 and it just didn't sound like a cranked Fender to me at all. Just a compressed mess.

I've actually been doing a ton of research on his recording process and apparently on the Manipulator album(one of my favorites) he did a lot of DI with the guitars... this might be more obtainable than I thought.

yeah the harsh and direct sounds on Ty's solo stuff is quite often the octave clang straight in. i've copped similar nastiness with a green ringer clone into a old-school recording desk fuzz like the hudson Broadcast.

I feel like their are a lot of different ways to skin this cat. I'm just posting to share a mutual appreciation of Ty and his sounds. Honestly, the live set from KEXP (the album with WHITE FENCE) has some of my favorite guitar tones... ever. I also L O V E the T. REX covers albums (TY REX    ).
The album for this "Joy" is good but I prefer the live set tonez. I ripped this file listen fairly frequently when it's lawn mowing season.

What about one of those OD's with a tube inside, like a Fryette? I was on that journey for a while, but stopped halfway through - there's a better thread somewhere with recommendations for that type of pedal, though.

For a less compressed Fender-style OD, the Tech 21 Blonde (or it's cheaper clone, the Joyo American) will probably have a wider range of boosting options than the Wampler (the Blonde also has a DI option), especially combined with the Fuzz War.

I will second the DI + Octave Clang recommendation a la Manipulator, which is still my favorite Ty project thus far, probably because the word "candy" is in every song.

There was a ESR Graphic Fuzz into Jordan Bosstone circuit floating around, if you put that through a verb, you'd likely get the tone

Man, those are some sweet live tones. And it's so hard to believe he's just using a Fuzz War into cranked amps.
