Neil Peart and the death of my musical youth

It amazes me that I've become one of those people who is amazed that things of significance to me happened 20...25 years ago...even longer, but I guess aging is something that happens to all of us whether conscious or not. When I complain to my mother about how getting old sucks and she snickers telling me I have NO IDEA...maybe it's a coming to terms with mortality thing...but in any event, I cried when I heard the news of Neil Peart's passing. I knew Rush was done, but they were my first concert and were far and away my favorite band when I saw them. Their music played such an impactful role on what I thought a musician could and should be like in my formative years of exploring music. Anyone else moved by the news?

Yeah Rush are/were very inspirational to me particularly at the point where I really dived into their catalogue and got into them in a huge way.
It's a shame.

They’re dead? Fuck, is it going to be one of those years again?
Rest In Peace!

i've never been much on Rush, but having lived through losing Jerry Garcia, Daevid Allen (and Gilli Smyth and Pierre Moerlen), John Cipollina, and 3/5 of the classic Can lineup i feel great compassion for the folks who are broken up over Neil, which oddly enough include a number of the folks on my Grateful Dead forum.

I find it hard to care about Neil Peart. I've always known Rush as one of those "prog rock that it's actually acceptable to like" bands, along with King Crimson. But I just don't care about their music. But another drummer that passed recently, which made me feel a lot like what you're describing, was Grant Hart.
