Not gonna lie, i think the whole multifx thing is getting done somewhat right. A) a selection fo a handful individually bipassable effects + looper. and b) not total ugly

im thinking of just giving up on pedals and getting one, that is, in the distant future when i can even afford one.

i don't understand teh Multi-EFX hate at all. i have an old Korg one that i love. pretty much becuz it is digital and it makes a bunch of weird-ass noises in one unit. the newer Digitech ones also have a looper.

i think i am nearing my "done w/ pedals" phase also. i am like one or two or three pedals away actually, then i may be done for a while.

I think the knocking of digital multi-fx is usually done because they're also paired with low-end solid state amps and beginner guitarists. There's a guy that lives in my building who has a Schecter guitar, a digitech rp1000, and a Marshall MG30. It's the thinnest-coldest sound I've heard. The sad part is his swollen pickle was just sitting there unplugged. :(

A lot of the hate is just cork-sniffing snobbery. However, the main reason why I don't like multis is that I've never found one with overdrive/distortion tones I like. The delays and modulations are usually perfectly usable and very tweakable.

But if I have to start using a separate pedal for my distortion tones, then that basically defeats the purpose of using a Multi-FX, which is having an all-in-one solution.

But I don't hate on people who use them, a lot of pro's use Boss, or pods or some other multi, and they're doing a lot better than me :picard:

I am in exactly the same boat opinion-wise. However, I've embraced the ridiculousness - I've got my my board, which is mostly distortion & octave effects, going into my Pod XT for modulation, delay & song-to-song tonal / EQ changes (me = dork). I've AB'ed my B:assmaster and the Pod's simulation of the original Brassmaster, and there is no comparison - the Malekko wins hands-down every time. The end result is that I take up way more space onstage than I probably should, but with a 2-piece band, it's not such a bid deal.

multi-fx are groovy, but compared to a line of actual fx pedals.... i'd say boo, man. i've tried both and the clarity and tonal characteristics of a couple stomp-boxes lined up in a row are just gorgeous to my ears. and they're not too bad to look at, neither. i'm gonna agree with jrmy here, though, and say that when you compare a modeler to the actual thing, it gets blown away. but sometimes that different sound is really what you want.

i think they both have their place. i've never tried the M9 though, it looks really really really fancy. :joy:

I don't know, I never was into the whole modeling thing. I like saving up for getting the pedal I want, rather than dishing out a few hundred for something that sounds great but isn't exactly what was sought. That being said, the M9 looks promising, especially since the M13 can be a bit clunky to lug around. Multi-fx are cool and all (and digital is amazing too), but I'm gonna stick to doing it one pedal at a time. If and when one of you guys gets an M9, let us all know how much it rocks.

oh i agree. i kind of take it for granted that the dirt on a multi-fx is going to be horrible. i don't use them.

basically, especially w/ Line 6, considering a lot of their stuff is digital right, instead of plugging money into like two of those modelers like the Line 6 DL4 & the FM4, or a couple of the Tonecore pedals, i would consider getting the Line 6 M9. sure...

for me, the thing w/ a Multi-FX is it narrows my focus on effects that you can't find even in a Multi-FX, garden-variety boutique or a clone, like say the Fuzzhugger Wolf Computer, an Audible Disease Convulsion, or a WMD Geiger Counter.

Tone always sounds thin. The distortion is always very dull. Sometimes the over-the-top effects are fun but even then, they sound so dull.

If you can 100% emulate a tone and several others in one unit then there would be no need for any other amp, but it doesn't. They all sound like a cheap knock off.

I'm totally in favor of individual stompboxes for most of my sounds, especially dirt, but after getting an SPX90 this year I've changed my outlook on digital multi FX a bit. The SPX adds an element to my sound that wasn't there before and allows me to use effects that I wouldn't necessarily blow lots of money toward a specific pedal on. I use nice amps and guitars and I don't find the sound thin unless I want it to be. PP is right on...a lot of the hating comes from the overall setup. If a digital multi FX unit is used properly and part of a quality setup they can be very useful and inspiring.

I still like having individual stomp boxes though...I know this probably isn't true at this point given how amazing digital modeling is, but I just feel like I can custom tailor a board to what I want by purchasing only the individual pedals rather than a big unit with all the sounds already there.

I don't mind multi effects, I just think it's better to get all the best effects for you carefully handpicked and researched. Plus you can trade individual pedals, you can't really trade away the chorus modelling in a POD for some new chorus. Plus, collection pedals and having each one have different exciting graphics and that pretty light up of different coloured LEDs and the excitment of waiting for new pedal to come in the mail is all taken away once you go for multi-FX.

well. if i didn't already have a Kaoss Pad & a Korg Multi-FX & want the KP3, i would consider the Line 6 M9. some modulation i'm fine w/ just the basics. stock stuff. for other modulation tweakability is optimal. just depends...sometimes i don't need the "best." other people "need" the best. it is subjective.

although i don't generally like to typecast, i think PP does have a valid point. the teenager w/ w/ the Line 6 Spider combo amp is probably more like to own a Line 6 M9 than the old geezer w/ the tube amp and the $1000+ guitar and the vintage Big Muff or whatever. you know what i'm talking about.
