GEAR GOALZ 2020 /Arbitrary Transparency/ Classic Zag 2020

I started and stopped making this thread multiple times in the past three weeks. Seemed too early, and I had an acquisition that changed everything for me.
What are your gear goals for 2020?
I will start. FAIR WARNING: I am going to comment on every comment in this thread. If you post it, I will read it, and say some things. I'm the Chief Deputy Soy Boy here.

inb4 "I'M GOING TO FOCUS ON MY MUSIC." BOO! Nobody likes music here anyway.
inb4 "I'M DOWNSIZING... M I N I M A L I S M" Take that shit to the Dali Ding Dong and get out here! This isn't a trim the fat thread! This is a "I'm going to melt a bunch of tallow and chug it through a funnel!" thread.
(   That was all in jest... I do actually very sincerely care about 1. Your music, if that is your goal and 2. Your downsizing, minimalism, if that is your goal. I care, but I 'kid' as well. :thumb:  )

I sort of have "Pillars" as opposed to itemized goals. I know my next pedal is the RMA Stone Splitter but that is it for a while (unless a GR-55 presents itself for a GREAT deal or a Boss SY-1000. Or in either case, I win like $1K off a scratch off or something).

1. Pillar I - Midi. Getting all my devices to talk to one another. Preset sequencing. Regular synth sequencing. Midi LFOs. The works. This will also determine what gear I buy (Midi splitters, routers, patch bays etc.)
2. Pillar II - DIY. As much as possible. I wanted to initially DIY different midi interfaces... but that company in the midi sequencing thread seems to do everything I want, and they're not unreasonably priced. DIY Pedals, speakers, routing devices etc.
3. Not really counting this as I'm starting now but I'm committing to Renoise and Bitwig as my DAWs. My buddy who I trust with this shit swears by bitwig. I've wanted to get deep into renoise since I read my hero Aaron Funk (the great VENETIAN SNARES) uses it.

Other stuff that sort of fits the tiers is using my ipad more for pedal controlling and synth sequencing. Using more iOs synth apps. My old boss (I watch her house from time to time) gave me like $30 in istore gift cards so getting the Wavestation app is on the to do list.

I guess another pillar is "don't be afraid to reach out to specific people on ILF who you think you can learn from". Shout out to Lordgalvar, echorec, Inconuucl, rfurtkamp, and tremolo3.

TLDR; I have enough hardware. More digital, more apps, getting the shit to talk to each other is the name of the game 2020.

How about you soy people? (Sorry... did not proofread)

Adding a second kiddo to the mix has made music really hard to do. I’m not entirely sure what the duck I’m doing with the songs I’ve written and depression, work, and parenting seem to leech some creativity out of me.

I spent a lot of the last year, and before, honestly, buying stuff to feel better and then not playing it. So I’ve flipped most stuff. I listed my amp locally but haven’t really had any bites. I don’t even know that I really want to flip it but 50w+ amps and kids are a tough mix.

Right now I’m committed to polytune 3, #rip, Rat 2, volume pedal, Ct5, DD-500.

Interested in a big box reverb. So maybe rv-500 or something of it’s ilk.

1. Get Digital Flora FX up and running. I want to do small batches and hopefully some collabs.

2. Try more fuzzes. I love the ones I've got on my board so much that I don't venture into the dirty unknown enough. Shame. Shame. Shame.

3. Downgrade my bass and guitar collection. I don't use half of this stuff.

4. Learn more about digital platforms and coding in general.

5. Get a small synth pedal. I keep buying the big complex boxes and hating them because they're too complicated. :animal:

UC Posted to quick... this was for my Cousin Ophob [odontophobia] - Hey brother I feel for you... I know some of these feels. Buying stuff to make me happy especially... recently found an old journal from 2013 what I wrote, "No material things will make yo happy." I had to start laughing and go FUCK! I KNEW THAT THEN?

Can you parenting become a source of creativity? You know how many songs there are about love but only 1 song about the boys being back in town? I'd love to hear some rock tunes about manning up and changing that fucking diaper. I listened to your podcast too m8. You use the cloth diapers which is more metal than jerking off in the woods and shit. Would you consider applying that? Even these feelings seem like a great source of creative inspiration. I know your "time" is limited though.

I don't know your living situation but I know your father in law was basically making your kids a tree Pent House  Can you keep the amp, get some foam from angle and make a shed or some shit?

Stupid question but would the #rip and rat 2 over lap a bit? Also ADD and Dropping Acid are collaborating for another #rip. I'm getting that based on principle...not need. All you other pedal choices seem clutch though. I think you'll enjoy the volume pedal. RV-500 seem like the best in that price range. I'm sure you can score one 20% off no problem too.

Regardless, excited for you brother.

1. Yes, I want you to do that too
2. Nah dawg... you fine the way you are. But trust your intuition. I know you've been busy and haven't been as prolific with demos and music (in a release capacity) but what you were doing worked for you and there are many who loved that (I myself was/am a huge fan). Hit me up if you want to borrow something. I have more fuzzez than I will ever know what to do with (not to the level of Peace Studio in Japan... just more than the average suburban fuck up  )
3. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THAT MANY!!! Who is this talking? You have closet space
4. Me and you both
5. Plenty out there now. I'm sure you'll make the right choice.

Quick Aside: Pretty sure Kate made this thread last year. Was not my original idea.

We live in the city proper so pent house becoming the alp house probably won’t work. I have a space where I can be loud but it’s not convenient right now. Will see what happens. Not gonna let myself get ripped off just to sell stuff.

And yeah, #rip and rat may over lap. Just haven’t had time to duck around so I can’t say if I want to flip.

Oh I remember you saying something about your Father In Law and you building the tree house that is Swiss Family Robinson tier level.
The only reason I commented on the #rip is because of the ADD collab with Dropping Acid... might be up your wheel house too. Actually, I saw you commented on that post

Sorry, I'm coming back to this because I have to know. You have a house now... just leave what you don't use somewhere out of sight. The only exception is... if your stuff is worth a lot of money (I have double digit guitars and they are garbage... I would literally have to give them away, so I hoard in case of projects). That's the only reason I can see selling them, is if they are actually worth something.

Like that bass you played the first irerror album... what do you think you'll get out of that? Is it worth the hassle of selling? You know? Just thoughts.

Sorry boys. ILF's favorite enabler is at it again

I’m typically an amp dirt guy. I’m actually gonna list the rat 2.

If my amp doesn’t sell (which is fine; I love the dirt on it and can play throw headphones with it) then I’m not sweating it.

I’m not playing bass in a band right now so my list is pretty small. If I were to connect with some people I wager my list would change.

Tame goals: I need to replace some cables for my PP2. Some of them have worn out. I might also be interested in a second isolated power supply so I can have a noise board and a bass board.

Less tame goals: more ugly used distortion pedals. I’ll buy any death metals, I’d like a vintage turbo rat, an original grunge, and of course a Buzz Box.

I have the perfect amp rig (that I never get to play), I’m basically married to my 6 string bass and never GAS for amps or basses and haven’t for years so that stuff is not anything I lust for.

My gear goals are minimal - I'd be more interested in connecting with some people and making music. Time is my barrier.

As soon as I can move, I do will buy shit tons of gear. This year I only got an OP-1 and I'm dying to get studio monitors, a DR103, a purple jaguar and if space allows it, a 4pc drum kit.

That is funny Ophobe. The #Rip. is kicking my Rat2 out of my possession as well. Similar enough, Rip is more versatile to dial in different textures of gain and blast feedback. Rat is just a stellar distortiony fuzz in an iconic enclosure. I want to keep it but I don't really like to collect extra things. So that bring me to my list:

1) Purge More. Currently trying to lighten up what I own. Usually this is either because I am trying to fund a new purchase or annoyed with pedals and ideas not working out. Neither are true right now. And I don't feel depressed, at least not more than my usual fuck everything attitude.

2) Put a board together. Various pedals strung out over the carpet has never been satisfying. Haven't had a proper board together for about 5 years. Blooper incoming and will make some decisions after that. Extras never work out, as they taunt me from the shelf and drawer. Just really focused on my basics with some extras to keep my satisfied. Playing loud with another person has shown me what is important and what isn't.

3) Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep. Analog BBD reverb. Might pass after hearing more clips but it the only pedal I am interested in right now. But other than that my needs and wants are well met. Hard to say what my pique my interest later on during the year. I would like to get to the point that when I buy my next pedal it is a real big fucking deal.

4) No more modules. My case is full of Make Noise and I just sold the last remaining module. I like working within their framework since it was designed to work together. I would only buy more MN at this point. Having a second modular case is just opening myself up to feed the gear addiction without actually focusing on making sounds and music. Still feel like I have plenty to learn with what I have.

5) Finally buy a decent record player. If there was ever one thing I could collect and not feel shameful for it has been music. My vinyl library is smallish and I limit my purchases on purpose. I often think that I shouldn't buy more records if I don't have a decent player, and I shouldn't buy a better player if I am not buying many records. No, I can't win.

6) Different 2nd amp. Never loved my Fender Twin and have it listed locally. Love my old Marshall JMP MkII. So when the Twin finally sells I will probably look for a 2nd amp of some type. Would explore some of those power amp pedals, maybe to use with a preamp like the Model Fet, at least it make a decent backup for a gig. Add a cab sim and that is a sort of dedicated multi purpose setup. Otherwise maybe a low wattage tube combo thing with bonus points for having a speaker out, tremolo, and a nice reverb. Would consider putting together a DIY kit of some sort. Already considered some rack amp gear and it isn't quite what I would want.

7) Video camera. Probably won't happen, but I am slightly interested in doing some proper videos. Maybe modular performance jams. Maybe actual videos to accompany music from myself or the band. Dunno.

I don't enjoy owning things I don't use, is all. Makes me feel icky. I prefer having as little clutter as possible, even in my storage areas. I don't have any really expensive guitars or basses. The bass you referred to was the bass Eivind used on the first iRerror album, and I was going to ask him if he wanted it back. If not, I'm sure someone else would enjoy it as a first bass.

2018 and 2019 have been great gear acquisition years for me. Right now I don't really need anything. Maybe a second BOSS SYB-3. And I'm waiting for a Fender MIJ Telecaster Deluxe Black Dove to show up somewhere. That's the only guitar I'd like to buy one day. I missed the oppotunity to buy it new when it was on the market a few years ago.
