tuning pins/pegs: advice, thoughts, etc.

i have no idea where to put this thread, so here it will be.
have been starting a few projects for various string instruments amplified in different ways and things just to mess around with sound, some of which i would be hammered that i would like to use tuning pegs for.
is there anyone here that has any experience for instruments that are similar to hammered dulcimers (khim, santur, etc.) and using tuning pins or pegs? Anything to look for or look out for? Anywhere people like to buy these in bulk (im assuming within north america would be cheapest)? Installation advice, etc.?
i know this is not a popular subject of discussion on ILF, but thought i would ask anyways and see if people had any first hand experience or advice making hammered stringed instruments. i have used prepared stringed instruments before and hammered them for recordings, but am looking to do other things that give me more flexibility with things i want to try out in the future outside of traditional acoustic instruments or electric instruments. mainly allow for more abuse... have some old pickups laying around that i will most likely throw together to be able to run different devices through amps with too.
these are basically going to be trash instruments made of trash i have laying around because im a street rat and that is what trash life equals i guess
