Do you guys have 'that guy' on your local CL?

Do you have strange postings that go on and on for years? IE a piece of gear priced to sell at a decent price but the poster never responds to inquiry and keeps spamming it nearly every day for years and years?
Or a guy that responds to your for sale ad with some attempt at trading the identical useless item over and over across multiple differing ads over years? IE someone tries to trade you some overpriced gin for an expensive pedal?

Tales from CL thread?

Giving credit where it is due. My last three (four?) craigslist translations have been really positive! Got great gear at low prices, and met some cool people in the process.

But that said, I am a huge fan of the “I won’t budge on the price. I know what I have and I know what it’s worth.” For an item that is sub $200 and has been posted for $18 months.... buddy... let it go.

Maybe I'm the guy here I dunno:
One time I drove 5 hours to pick up an amp that was $1000 dollars, I decided to buy it, plunked down the cash and somehow I was short a $20 dollar bill, it was on a Sunday, there were no banks open and I had hit the ATM limit for the day, I scrounged around my car and came up with $13, so I was $7 short, and the guy wouldn't budge, he wouldn't let me have the amp $-7. Guys house was huge. I offered to paypal him the 7 bucks right there, leave collateral that he could ship back and I would pay the shipping, I offered to give him a Boss SD1 that happened to be in the car on top of it. Nope. He knew how far I drove. Recounted the money for like the 7th time and it was all there and I bough the amp, I'm pretty sure I didn't even haggle him down on his CL asking price either. I think the guy was a fucking dipshit but idk :idk: Maybe he just had multiple interactions with people trying to stiff on an agreed on price during the sale (IE "Ill tell you what, I have 500 dollars in my pocket" [when you agreed in the emails to $650 prior]...FUCK AMERICAN PICKERS, STORAGE WARS AND FUCK PAWNSTARS FOR THIS SHIT)..I have that happen pretty much every time now and it's grown to piss me off. On the flip side I did have a guy pay me the final $5 of a $600 Telecaster in basically pennies which was annoying...I would have let him have it if he didn't have the coins on him though.

One time I sold a Box of Rock to the infamous Mason of Vertex pedals. I met him downtown in San Francisco on Market Street, there were no places to park of course so I hopped in his pickup and he drove around whilst checking it out, took him like 2 minutes to decide to buy it but then proceeded to drive around for like the next 25 minutes talking my ear off and I basically couldn't escape out of his pickup until I piped up and told him I needed to go, it was mega awkward. He seemed like a nice guy though.

One time I bought a Sequential Six Trak and the guy failed to tell me it didn't work at all. That was one of my first forays into music gear and CL though, eventually figured out how to repair it with replacing some burnt out chip and caps or some bullshit...you'd figure information like that would be pretty crucial though.

10 years agoI had a guy show up to play some weird synth pedal I bought and proceed to dick around with it for 40 minutes and then decide not to buy it, I only remember that interaction though because I have never seen that pedal again and forget what it was, and it's been bugging me for years trying to find another. I think I bought it from PGS, it was a octave/synth pedal called a Black Hole or something like that, I've never been able to find it online though. It was very similar to the EQD data corrupter and looked similar (white and black with a big knob near the middle, but was a 1590DD) but it definitely wasn't one, I think it came out way before the Data Corrupter.

You’re not that guy. That’s ridiculous. $7? I almost ran into a similar situation and was going to do the same thing as you 1. Put the cash I had on me down and 2. Offer electronic payment of some type (never actually resorted to this but... for the stuff I buy... most people have SOMETHING in the space of fin tech and we’re not talking $100, $50, or even $20... like maybe only have 50s on me and the thing is $160).
I wouldn’t say I “Low balled” for stuff... but I kind of had ‘rules’. 1. The item had to be posted for an inordinately long time 2. Had to be cheap already 3. This usually gets me stuff pretty discounted... say you can come get it today. “If you want this gone today, I have $X.” But that’s also where 1 & 2 come into play (this will not work, I assume, if you’re trying to get a high end science amp or something that retains value... the crap I buy is like... a knock off of a knock off SG for $185 but I might offer $140).

I posted about this in another thread but there is currently a Yamaha VSS-30 on my local craigslist, with no price because the poster wants offers... he knows what has. No one is pulling a FAST ONE ON HIM!!!!

Oh and this is the most basic of the basic in human transactions... but when I reach out... I always reconfirm the item and the price in my E-mail. And depending on how much back and forth there is, I will reconfirm it. “Right, so when I get to your address (confirm address) at (confirm time) I will give you no more than (amount you agreed on).

You know what? I’m thinking about this and I should mention, it’s more so you don’t look like a dick if someone tries to pull a fast one on you. OBVIOUSLY, this doesn’t “protect” you from anything. What are you going to do? Call HR? Tell on the person?

I mean, I don’t do Craigslist anymore just because of bullshit like this. You agree to a prize, bring the right amount. It’s not my fault if you don’t have enough money. I’ve had people say that shit and I’m like “no, why the fuck are you wasting both our time”. For 7 bucks I wouldn’t trip out but then again, we agree to one thing and another happens, I’m not dealing with you again. Ask some past ILF bros who have been ripped off by this kind of shit.

I’ve bought almost all my gear on CL (or where I come from, Canada, we use Kijiji  ) and I can usually tell when a pleasantly worded email without haggling is going to net that sweet Peavey Mark IV bass head for $100 bucks rather than get it down to $90.

I will also always offer to drive out and pick whatever it is up and that always sweetens the deal, but my wife is never impressed as she sits in the car while I make the obligatory gear small talk for 5 minutes.

I’ve had a whole bunch of annoying dickheads when selling but I shut that shit down fast. No I will not drive out to the 905 to sell you an $80 pedal. No I will not take $50. No I do not want a zoom multi effect in trade. No I do not want a DS-1. No. No. No no no no no no.

OT: I did see the same guy reposting the same ad for a DD7 (for $180) and a DS-1 (for $100) for FUCKING YEARS and they would repost it EVERY DAY. NO TRADES! PRICE FIRM!!!!

I wonder what happened to that guy.... preposterously uncool prices and stock photos of the pedals.

I’m sure I’ll think of more....

I’ve honestly had great dealings for the most part. Bought my dream bass, dream heads, and a ton of sick pedals. Even my MS-20 mini I got for sure cheap.

When I’m “that guy” it’s when I say I want something like a $300 Buzz Box and then realize I don’t have $300 but I always email and be straight with them.

On the buying end, Retinal Orbita is right 'pleasant e-mails' go a long way. People have hooked me up many times just cause I could form a complete sentence and said my "Please" and "Thank you"s.
I got an MS-20 mini for a killer deal off Craigslist too! And my dream bass (It's a piece of shit but it's 'my dream' bass ).

I sold one thing in my entire life on Craigslist. The people were cool (pleasant E-mails) so I just gave them the stupid thing (it was a mattress loft).

My one bad craigslist story is in another thread but I was kind of playing with fire there.

I had a couple of great experiences on CL but mostly I see overpriced stuff there (maybe it's supposed to be for haggling but I hate haggling).

Earth B2000 Superbass head (2 channel 100 watt tube amp) for $250. Makes a beefy guitar amp (and is still a total sleeper amp, you guys)
Crate Power Block for $70 - not that great of a price now (?) since there have been so many portable amps released, but at the time it was a deal. And he dropped it off!

I did a couple of solids too:
One person needed a cheap guitar to practice stage tricks with (so they wouldnt ding their fancy guitar I guess). I had a cheapie for sale and just gave it to them (I was asking like $50)
I had a pair of PA speakers listed for $100 but completely I forgot one of the tweeters was blown. Guy wanted them for street parties, he had brought his little kid with him. I gave him the speakers for free, just to be done with it.
I was $7 short, and the guy wouldn't budge, he wouldn't let me have the amp $-7. Guys house was huge. I offered to paypal him the 7 bucks right there, leave collateral that he could ship back and I would pay the shipping, I offered to give him a Boss SD1 that happened to be in the car on top of it. Nope.
This is legendary.

I did a partial trade with a guy (this was the late 90s, we connected through a music store I was working at) for my Stratocaster, and he held firm on his price to the point at which he went home with $20 in quarters.

Someone about an hour south of me who appears to collect tools and stuff at estate sales, then turn around and ask insane prices as if the thing was either brand new or collectible. They used to just post one ad with like 20 pictures of different things, followed by a list of prices referencing "picture number 1" etc, but there were no numbers on the pictures so you had to hope the sequence was correct. All the ads would begin with:

"You are buying one or all"

I just did a search, and it appears they have figured out how to make a post for each item separately. Now the post just begins with:

"You are buying all"

https://eugene.craigslist.org/art/d/dra ... 87422.html

https://eugene.craigslist.org/grd/d/dra ... 16473.html

https://eugene.craigslist.org/grd/d/dra ... 06150.html

Sometimes it's nice to spot the wackos from way off.

I wonder if that bum deal on the 2011 rip-off call-out thread was pivotal or contributed in some motivational way in the creation of Industrialectric?
