I think I need a flanger (but I hate flangers...)

Ok so back in my filled up PT-Pro days I had a Strymon flanger to make whirly psychedelic sounds but it didn't work out. It just made my dirt sound like a mess of white noise (in a bad evh way) or made everything sound like Tool or some shit like that. So I ended up getting rid of it and using chorus instead. I guess I am weird cause I love chorus after distortion but don't like flangers.

Anyways! I just got an urge to get a flanger again just cause I love goth shit. Like I have been on a huge Cure kick and I just love the sounds they get with flangers and choruses stacked. Like the bass intro on Holy Hours is just the sickest thing ever.

I did fuck around with the bitquest flanger but felt as disappointed as always, even the batshit crazy stuff just felt like uninspiring flangy crap. I also tried to get some flangier sounds with my moog chorus also and got some ok stuff but felt still kind of wrong :idk: I have done some stuff on ye computer machine too but still just feels like a bad ocean sound effect.

Am I just feeling "I don't have this so I need it"? I am thinking I should rather just get another chorus pedal but like all chorus pedals are boring as shit overpriced mojo boxes for old SRV/Gilmour/whatever old dudes who use chorus without getting shunned by the haters.

Try the flanger before distortion. I prefer the other way round, though.

If you like the Cure flanger sounds, I got real close using the Bitquest so that sounds strange to me. Have you tried to mess with the Tone and Mix knob? It really helps to deal with the "metallic" character of the flanger.
Unpopular opinion: the Boss BF-3 might be a cheap option for those kind of sounds, after all Robert Smith used to have a BF-2 if I remember correctly.

BF-3 is great. I prefer it over the BF-2.

I hate flangers too, but the EHX deluxe electric mistress sounds good to me. It's just not as 'in your face' as a lot of other flanger/choruses I've heard. Just keep the depth knobs below noon and you're good.

Never tried the deluxe but the old version of the Electric Mistress is one of the best sounding Flangers I ever had the change to play.

All those versions might sound the same, it's just that the deluxe is the only one I've played and heard irl.

That's possible, though I have had too a sort of flanger-rejection for some years, recently I've started to enjoy it when placed here and there in subtle ways.
Not enoguh gas to buy one, but enough to use the Bitquest when I need it.

that said I'm a flanger person I enjoy flangers in general

Maybe a phaser instead? Different things but there are now decades (fuck, I’m old) of online discussion documenting that it’s hard for some people to tell the difference in context.

Otherwise, the edges beyond normal flangers are worth investing. Lovetone Flange With No Name (clones via DIY or a helpful builder), Ibby FL-99 (clone boards available), EHX Flanger Hoax, maybe Chase Bliss Spectre?

For cheaps, the Mooer E-Lady flanger is a good non-Deluxe Electric Mistress clone. Leans more liquid than jet plane swoosh. Worth a try. As is the Boss HF-2 Hi-Band Flanger, which a lot of people use as a stand in for the Mistress and has a clone on the market from Valeton, the FL-10.

People should listen to music through proper speakers instead of using cranked up smartphones. How can you mistake a flanger for a phaser or vice versa?! :|:

I have tried some settings like that on the bitquest, havent played with the mix much but thats just cause i find it just makes it disappear (shocker right there...). I like tone really low but I would like to set it higher cause I like the out of phase and icepicky sounds. I just dont like it with the feedback at all.

The Mistress sounds nice I did consider that mooer but it's kind of boring to me, I guess it's too rock 'n roll.

I'd get a hoax any day but it's darn big for a special effect like that. Guess I could put it on a desk or something though
