It's kind of weird. Buzzcocks were always there, you know? Pete Shelley was an amazing song writer in our little part of the world. But reading what all the old punks I talk to in the groups*, I don't even think they realized (like I didn't) how much influence his personal and style kind of influenced punk and independent music.
There was no gimmick or anything like that...just a new kind of liberation/being yourself. It's an odd feeling that he's gone. Moreso than I or anyone I know felt when any of the Ramones or Kawakami or somebody like that...
Not to mention, Buzzcocks are one of the few bands that the wife and I share haha. "Crass or Buzzcocks?" "Buzzcocks"
* Yea, I'm part of some networks of professors and punks that publish and stuff.
