Any clue? Could it be just a synth? Because I know that guy was more into synths back then. :idk:

Never owned a fuzz nor a synth that sounds that fat.

At 4:00 sounds even fatter

Thank you!!

Also fuzz talk.

Yes, it's likely a Moog synth.

Theres a percussiveness that kind of sounds maybe it's a combo organ or clavinet run through a fuzz too

Quite possible. I would imagine you could get this sound with either a mono synth, a toy keyboard, or an organ into a fuzz. With enough dirt, the original instrument doesn't really matter. Years ago my friend had a really cheap Hohner synth, that he'd run through a Muff---that was the best guitar I'd ever heard.

It does sound like a synth or organ as source to me as well. I've built some stuff that gets into that territory..

The issue you run into pretty fast is that it's beneficial to bias the circuit into either cut-off or saturation at idle to keep the noise at rest down, and those regions play hell with the tail end of your notes - so using something like a synth, organ or drum machine becomes optimal, guitar or bass not so much (unless you're wanting the jagged gates).

Farfisa Combo organ + fuzz of your choice = chef's kiss :joy:

Stereolab tended to use the Moogs 4 more squigglyness or deep sub basslines, but Tim or whoever probably doubled the lead line along with the Farfisa & fuzz in tow, hence that beneath the valley of the ultra fuzz sound.

This Peel Session version has less fuzz but is no less importante:

I can't remember them relying on fuzz live (the Farfisa was the majority of the heavy grime/growl), as the Tim & Martin's (& sometimes Laetitia's) guitars/bass sounds were mostly clean throughout to cut through the mix.

Anyway, the stock Farfisa sounds are really beautiful & walk that fine line between utterly cheesy & totally sublime, which is why Yo La Tengo still tour with one (drones!).
