My girlfriend and I have a suspicion that Spotify's algo takes into account geolocation. Her radios and mixes always end up playing Fugazi and the Dead Kennedys (which she does not dig/listen to regularly, for no one is without flaw) and I tend to get a shitload of The Gun Club and that sort of post-punk (which I do not listen to regularly, for no one is without flaw).

Admittedly there's not a massive gulf between the above listed bands

Unless your significant other/drunken self is favouriting John Denver, then it's probably not due to recommendations, and it's definitely not accoustic similarity. But maybe the natural language processing could explain it... if lots of HoF fans et al post about how shit John Denver is, and Spotify is missing the qualifier "shit".

Or John Denver is a nameless ghoul, who knows?
