I have a Roland 404 sampler which needs to trail off whenever the samples are stopped, but I don't want a delay to muddy the sound when it's playing, I just want the Roland to trail off.

If the repeats can be potentially loud/volume control, that's a bonus. There's other sounds happening at the same time, so subtle things get kinda lost in the mix. If it's in a pedal format (and not expensive?) also a huge bonus.

I can't switch a delay on and off manually, I'm busy doing other stuff. I can't prerecord the trails on the Roland, the sample lengths are not predetermined (they are loopable). I can't use the built-in Roland delay, it smears the sound. Hmmm, I might be able to fade out with a volume pedal, but if it was automated that would be a lot better (one less thing to juggle). I just want to stop the sample but have them trail off. Is a ducking delay what I want? Or is that usually too subtle?

The KORG ToneWorks 301dl does a really nice job with ducking. It is one of my favourite digital delays.

In my demo there's only one setting with a little amount of ducking (4:25). It gets really extreme if required.

You could also try a gated delay. I'm sure there are others, but the only one I know of is Gjengangar by Pladask.

Edit: that's the opposite of what you want. I'm officially an idiot.

Another option (which gets complicated quickly) is putting a comp after the delay and side chaining to your signal so that the comp is released when it goes quiet.

pigtronix echolution does this well, but is expensive

alternatively, you could probably make a signal chain with the rainger fx deep space pulsar do this with any delay, if your 404 has multiple outs and your destination (amps/mixer) has multiple ins?

DL4 does ducking IIRC.

Autocorrect has ruined me. My first thought was, "Why does K2000 want a delay pedal to plow them?"

I think the Zoom MS70CDR and G3's Dyna Delay is a ducking delay. and cheap.

the timebender has a ducking delay setting, but I don't know if its better or worse than any other ducking delay

Among other things The eventide timefactor and H9 duck very well.

tc nova delay and the repeater have ducking also.

Even has a dedicated DUCKING knob, that's a good sign.

Came here to suggest the same thing...which I own because of Pepe though I don't use that function a ton. Maybe I should.
This pedal has two modes you can save too, btw. They also have twice the controls than knobs, as the toggle in the up position makes the knobs function different things than the down.

Boss DD-500 is an option is you want to get into the parameters and set things
just so. You can set a few ducking parameters, but some complain that there is
no attack or release time adjustments available. So... there's that.

From the manual:

DUCK SENS: Adjusts the sensitivity at which the volume is automatically adjusted according to the input. Higher values allow the adjustment to occur in response to lower volumes.

DUCK PRE DEPTH: The volume being “input” to the delay is automatically reduced when the input sound is loud. The amount of reduction increases as this setting approaches 100.

DUCK POST DEPTH: The volume being “output” to the delay is automatically reduced when the input sound is loud. The amount of reduction increases as this setting approaches 100.
