I still don't have a satisfactory main dirty sound...

I'm not sure what to do about this.

I want a fairly high gain sound that'll sound decent with single coils and humbuckers.

Ideally I'd like to be able to switch between a bright Marshally sound and a more mid heavy one.

I don't want it "Metal" voiced like a lot of high gain pedals. I want it to actually sound pretty interesting, I find my Turbo RAT a little plain these days.

I'd love a distorted sound like the heavy bit from "Dissolved Girl" by Massive Attack.

Given Daniel Ash's tone is pure Solid State, I doubt it. The Turbo RAT sounds better through SS amps in my opinion anyway, as it looses the gritty edge through a warm tube amp, which includes the models on my AD30VT. There's very little difference between a clean tube amp and clean modelling amp especially when coming to using external dirt. Also, the AD30VT isn't a Spider or some shit. It actually has a tube in it for a start. As long as I keep the Master cranked, the power tube keeps being saturated.

I don't think the Turbo RAT is the sound I'm after anymore is all. It's just a darker, hairier JCM800 basically.

ok...my bad. :)

But...I'm not so sure about this...

The difference is huge in my opinion.

Have you looked into Catalinbread? The Dirty Little Secret sounds pretty good at getting that Marshall sound.

My AD30VT already does Marshall pretty well, I just need something vaguely similar for when I can't drag it around. Overall I'd like the pedal to sound pretty original, just get that kinda mid range crunch at some settings. That's not essential at all though.

I doubt you'd be able to tell live or in a mix. Especially if it's a modelling amp that has a tube in it anyway.

If you think that one 12AX7 in preamp makes such a difference in sound,then...ok.I guess you haven't tried it side by side with a good cranked tube amp.. :idk:

It's not using it as a preamp. It's using it as a poweramp. And you can keep it cranked/saturated pretty much all the time. Also, the modelling still sounds decent even without the tube. When are you reliably going to be able to "crank" a tube amp for bedroom practice anyway? And isn't part of the point of distortion pedals for some people that you get decent tones without having to crank? Generally you don't always "crank" the amp if you're using a pedal, especially if you want to go from clean to dirty.

This is the last place I expected to find tube purists...

I think it's the amp. I'm not knocking the vox, but I never liked the way any modeler reacted to pedal dirt, tubes or not.

I'm not a 'tube purist' or cork sniffer for that matter...I love lab and sunn amps...but i know that digital amps combined with tubes and such simply don't deliver when you plug a good dirt pedal into them....whatever...i won't bother you anymore... :)

I was referring to this...

Cranked...live....tube or modeling... :idk:
