Rackmount analog delays?

I sold off my belle epoch but am still itching for a delay. I'm really after something I can set on top of my amp and easily fiddle with. I mean tape delay would be the obvious holy grail, but I don't want to spend a ton on something that isn't the most reliable piece of gear.
Any suggestions for something like an analog delay that's rackmountable? Even a DIY option sounds interesting to me.

Just take any analog delay you find and rehouse it.
Most rack mount delays are digital since the rack mount crowd is less discouraged by digital.

Yamaha E series have always held a special place in my heart, though you're looking at a 2U tall unit (if that matters).

I think taller would be more pleasing than shorter.

If you want an analog delay off the floor, there are definitely more tabletop options than racks. Maxon/Ibanez and Yamaha made some great BBD delays in the 80s, which can still be found for under $300. Like DRod noted, don't discount the ability to rehouse or rack it. If you want something with a dark sound, that's inexpensive and won't make you feel guilty about racking it, I'd look into the DM-2w or a Malekko. Also, the Mooer Ana Echo is small enough and inexpensive enough, that you could buy 2 for a cascade effect ($100 for a pair), and put them on top of a combo amp or a half-stack without any problems.

How hard would it be to rehouse and allow a footswitch to be connected?

Most of the 80s units I've looked at (rack/desktop) have a dedicated footswitch port.
Yamaha E1005
Maxon AD100
Maxon AD200 (and so forth)
There are also more powerful (and more expensive options) like the Ibanez AD230 (likely $500+ if you find one) or Moog's 500 series analog delay which is $699 for 800ms of rack delay.
Don't forget that vintage units will likely have mild noise, or be in need of basic servicing to ensure optimal performance.

True. It's seeming like rehousing a delay might be my best option.

Alright. I think I want to take a DM-2w and rehouse it into a project box.
Now I just need to figure out how to turn the footswitch into an input for a footswitch.

If I remember correctly, boss switches are spst momentary, so it should be relatively simple to achieve once you get to that step.

That Ibanez AD 150 looks slick.
Are there any other units I should keep an eye out for?

Necro!
I recently came across a Yamaha E1005 for sale locally and honestly had no idea this kind of thing even existed! It's currently going for $400 CAD (about $300 USD?). Not a lot of info in the guys post, but the pictures of look pretty clean. Is this worth pursuing?
Also, sent me on a little into a little hole of rack mount, analog delay research and came across the Klark Teknik DN34 and DN36, which look amazing!

ELI SL-3535/SL-4040
Gemini EC 444
Boss DM-100
Dynacord VRS-23
I have no experience with any of them but they exist
