follower vs filter

hey does anyone know if theres a difference between an envelope follower and envelope filter?
if so what are the differences

e.g micro q tron (envelope follower)
lovetone meatball (envelope filter)

I think 'envelope follower' actually = 'envelope followed filter' (in this case) which means the pedal uses it's envelope follower to modify a filter. Where as 'envelope filter' is just 'envelope followed filter' but different slang.

An envelope follower is a type of circuit that can be used to modify other things, which is in most cases a filter.

The reply above is correct. An envelope follower circuit basically has a voltage that follows the shape of your signal envelope (i.e. how loud your signal is) and it can be stuck into any type of effect, but most manufacturers use it to sweep a filter. However, there are envelope phasers out there, and other things being controlled by an envelope follower as well (like the Moog Freqbox, which uses an env follower to sweep the freq knob.)
