I know there's the Peavey XR1200 and various Sunn and Yamahas that I don't know model names for, but what else is out there? Mainly going to be using this noise/synth stuff. Also possibly to use as a really vintage sounding deal when recording some things? I don't really need 12 channels if there's something with 8?

Also I'd prefer to find this used on the super cheap.

Older mixers can be rough to locate if you're after a specific model number...

In my experience, most anything built before 1985 that has an on board reverb will be a spring, the TOA RX series desk with internal echo being an exception (that's a BBD chip).

The Unisync Trouper 1 is a six channel mono rack mounted board with a spring.

Biamp built an FOH live music mixer with a spring, the model number slips my mind, 1621 I think? Anyway, it was a big board, like three feet across.

The Altec 1214 also has a spring... and an amp, it's quite a heavy thing for a suitcase model. Also a six channel monophonic thing.

If you're shopping in person, just hit it to test if it's a spring. If it's online, and you can hunt out a manual, the companies were pretty proud of on board reverb back then, and they will tell you about it.

Old Traynor mixers can be really cheap. My organ player has a vintage WEM mixer that he says has the NICEST reverb, but he reckons it's worth like £1000 so not cheap. It looks dead fucking cool as well.

I figured, and I'm worried shipping will be really cost prohibitive. Those are all really good options though after looking them up. I work in a music store so it's always something I can keep an eye out for

They also had a PA- line, with more functions and channels.

There's a Yamaha EM-150 that keeps popping up on CL, I don't know anything about it but it looks fun & flirty.

I didn't even realize there were mixers with spring verbs... now my interest is quite piqued. I've been wanting to get a mixer for my synth stuff over the past year or so, but frankly all of the new shit I've seen has seemed thoroughly meh. I mean it's fine and all, but I would not at all be jazzed about like a Yamaha MG12 or something, though that's been the top competitor.

Would totally pay more for something with a bit more vibe. Like spring reverb for starters. Thanks for this thread... mind opened

I just looked up those WEM mixers on Reverb for prices...

There are two, one for around 9 grand and the other for around 13 grand!


I think they are both from the same guy though, dunno if he is a nut or not. He has one of George Harrison's Vox amps for sale for around $113,000, and the option of having one of the cabs it came with for an extra $10,000


I just saw one of these Shure Vocal Master PA mixers on my craigslist asking $150, maybe look for those in your area

It's sort of a weird mutt, but I scored a Sunn Concert PA back i July for $225. Built like a head, 5 channels, two band eq, switchable reverb per channel. I use it to mix down the sum of stereo pedals, or monitor synths and guitar loops at the same time.

You looking to record, or is this for live use?

Your friend is trippin'! These can be had for £100-£300 still. Granted they are always beat up though. Maybe they are that much in the US, but the UK they still come up fair often. There's also a suitcase version without the big knobs.

Ah I thought there were only 2, but I am probs wrong. The one from your pic is on the back of Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, that actual mixer was for sale on reverb a while back, dunno if it's still there. They do sound very nice indeed
