I'm looking for a tasty great-sounding overdrive, but have budget constraints. What do you recommend? I'm open to very classic tones as well unusual or brash ones, can be mass produced or boutique, new or secondhand...

Coax daltont into getting you a Groundswell OD. It's phenomenal sounding and way versatile.

If you want a meaty overdrive for under $100 you'd have to be crazy not to grab this Mellowtone Singing Tree (you even get the chose the color scheme )

I would agree with the singing tree or groundswell as best options.

Earthquaker Devices makes great ODs but they will run you $150 or so.

On that budget, I would suggest the MXR Distortion III as a mass-production alternative. Even though they call it distortion, it is really an OD.

Singing Tree.

I would say if you want a gainy sort of OD you can get a smoother tone and a crunchier bite out of the singing tree is the best thing you can even ponder.

I actually fell in love with my MXR Wylde Overdrive. It's the Smoothest OD pedal i've ever played, it makes my guitar sing. But it does not get a crunch out of my amp.

You'd think a pedal made for that shithead would sound like shit and would be heavy as hell.

Not the case.

Frankly before my brother bought it (i bought it off him, cuz it wasn't metal enough for him) i thought it would make my guitar sound like a turkey. Everyone of that dudes solo's sounds like a turkey gobbling. Fucking worst guitarist.

Great pedal though.

yeah, the Wylde overdrive is really good as well. Though it is $100 new, you can probably find it online for under $70 used if you are so inclined.

The Wylde OD was made to be played through an already overdriven Marshall amp, or so I'm told. I wouldn't recommend it here, not exactly a 'meaty' pedal.

This is infact true.

It can get pretty thick, but it's never a real thick crunch box.

i actually like MXR for the reason they don't get thick.

I've got my Big Muff and Brit Face for that.

This is one of the best gain stagers in my rig though, it plays very nice, all the time.

How's the DOD FX100 Integrated Tube Even Harmonic Overdrive,guys? anyone used it before? There's a great deal on this DOD in the classifieds where I live...

I have only been using distortions and fuzzes..discounting the Dano transparent overdrive I use as level boost for my mini-Kaos pad.

That is essentially true -- it is "Designed" to be kind of a lead-boost for metal players, but it does have "off label" uses.

I would suggest the Distortion III as a better option, though.

Blues Driver is a good suggestion as well -- boss pedals (other than delay) aren't really my taste, but they are a good option nonetheless.
