Okay seriously what the fuck

Why does every fucking fuzz sound exactly the same in a loud full band context? Am I doing it wrong? I've tried out like 5 different fuzzes over the last few months and they all sound the fucking same when everyone is playing.
HELP. I see dudes with multiple dirt on board. HOW DO YOU DO IT? What the fuck.

Are you playing bass or guitar and what kind of fuzzes have you used?

Hah! Sorry I'm slightly tipsy after band practice.
Right now I'm using a Harmonic Percolator for low gain and Mini for medium. And a green ringer for octave up stuff duh. I'm playing a jag, almost always with the neck pickup (cause fuck that switching on the Jaguar, and also I've never had a bridge pickup i liked the sound of). I've borrowed a ton of things over the last couple months. Just in the past couple weeks I've tried a fuzz factory, a Buzzz, an Infanem STEP, and the Mini on high gain. They all sound basically the same once the full band is going. I've tried boosting the volume to unhealthy levels, but they still all sound pretty similar.
I really only want to kick in the fuzz for single note stuff that I want to sound bigger, and maybe some slower big parts. I want something big and gated. I made a thread about this last week because I'm the worst and dont stick to a thread.
Anyways, my low/medium gain sounds are fairly distinct, but I wanted my fuzz to kick you in the teeth and balls at the same time. Big gated kicks to the teeth and balls that have some character for Christ sakes. Is it because I'm playing single notes stuff with it? Not enough harmonic stuff for it to play with?

I got it early! Dialed in some rad sounds, got stoked as fuck, and then when it came time to kick it on with the band, it just sounded the same but louder. I messed around with it a lot. It didn't sound bad at all, but any kind of character it had was totally lost once we were all playing.

I've had fairly similar experiences. Last loud band I was in I used an eau Claire thunder for a few months and then a TAFM. No one noticed the difference. In theory they should be real different.

I feel the same about fancy delays. Once there's a bunch of stuff going on, the little modulation details -- it rises, then falls! (or name any feature you like) are often swamped.
Melvins dude plays a Boss ODB-3, possibly because it's similar enough to a boutique pedal, and easily replaceable.

Also, could be that pedals downstream are dominating the upstream pedals, or you sound like your amp sounds, and little changes upstream aren't making a big dent.

Thats pretty much the deal when playing in a band context...particularly a loud one..all the subtleties you liked in your effects when playing at lower volumes or solo are lost. I think this is a truism for most if not all effects.

Also because it's gnarly and awesome.

I think you might need to get friendly with that bridge pickup.
