I have some awful speaker cab and it's starting to wear on my mate's in my band and myself. Too broke to buy an Avatar currently, so I was thinking of buy speakers and putting them in the cab in the meanwhile. I know that wood effects tone, but will they completely suck in the cab or is it worth it?

You left out a lot of info.
What kind of cabinet is it, sealed, ported, front loaded or rear loaded, speaker size?
What is it made of MDF, Ply, white pine, card board (ok some old Danos were)?
What amp are you playing through it, and is it guitar or bass?
What sound are you looking for, type of music?
And last what is your price range?

It's some random old peavey. 4x12 and it's ultra light. It's plywood and rear-loaded. Playing guitar through a Sovtek mig 50. I'm not sure how to describe the music, but I need diversity because I play multiple kinds of music, so I try not to cater to one sound except what I consider good.
Myspace.com/pickeyeaters is the music of my most active group, but I was using a v30 loaded Marshall for the recording

Have you considered building your own cab? Alot of people do and really like the sound, here's a good link to start you...
http://www.diyguitarist.com/ (go to the DIY speaker cab section and links at the bottom)
If your after a new speaker though... most people just go for Celestions... how it will sound, well you'll have to find out, but you'll end up with a good speaker at the end so you can't complain.
I'd suggest building your own cab though, it's good fun, easy and you can recycle lots of stuff, some people make there cabs outta old cabinets etc.
