Mic recommendations, under $200?

I am looking for as good as possible a micriphone for home recording. Maybe a condenser mic, but I'm definitely interested in hearing whatever you've used and liked.

Also, if possible, for less than $200.

Any recommendations?

What kind of mic, Instrument, vocal?

The standard fall back is the SM57, works well for inst and vocals, and can be found used all day long for a lot less than 100.

The Sennheiser’s are tops for instrument recording and are just under the $200 mark.

CAD makes some very nice mics, more a live sound vs studio kind of mics but you can get mic sets for less than $200.

Audio-Technica makes some good cheap ones. I've got an AT3035 ldc, which is enough for my purposes. I really hate SM57/58s for recording.

I owuld bump up to the shure 57 beta. It has a more crisp upper range, and so far, sounds good on everything I've tried.

+1 on that - my bandmate is the gearhead of my band, and when it comes to inexpensive mics, he swears by the 57 beta.

Well, obviously it won't represent a real bass cab very well, but for everything else....

Take a look at the Oktava's, altho I think that in the US they're rebranded as EHX and may work out more expensive. Anyway, here in Europe they come quite cheap and they're built like tanks.

Basically for old skool 4-track home recording, mostly acoustic guitar and no doubt some wild fuzzy electric too.

I've been recommended this: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-TubePre-MXL990-Condenser-Microphone?sku=270354 ...anyone tried one?

Check out the Rode NT-1A. It's great for acoustics and vocals. Also check out the AKG Perception 200. Also nice on acoustics and vocals. I have used both and like them a lot.
