I know dod and digitech made a bunch of 'em back in the day, but I haven't really come across any demos of stuff that doesn't sound too similar to what I've already got...



Other ideas to expand the little collection are still welcome, but there's a specific question here too: Can anyone here school me on the DOD FX59 Trash Master? Circuit pedigree, behaviour with other pedals, etc...

I can highly recommend the completely underestimated BOSS HM-3 and the KORG DST-3.

A few years ago I decided to sell the HM-3, but then I tried it at a live gig through my Marshall 50W tube amp. This evening was kind of a revelation for me. The HM-3 rocked that night. Sounds a bit like Jeff Beck's late '90s solo sounds, which I absolutely love.

And somehow I missed the KORG DST-3 that I sold two years ago and two weeks ago I received another one and I will keep it. Can sound like a fuzz, too, because of the Big-Muff-like behaviour of its tone knob.

Both pedals have some overlap in sound, but they have each their own strength. The best thing of the HM-3 is the EQ and it makes low-tuned stuff sound full and transparent. Whenever someone asks for a good distortion for his 7-string guitar, the HM-3 is the first thing I can recommend for that purpose.

The HM-3...I don't doubt it's in the category of overlooked trashy beauties I'm into, but with the fabtone and HM-2 already in my possesion, I figured I had the buzzy high gain thing more than covered

A little overlap is inevitable, there's only so much 80s/90s high gain cheapos. But still, I was hoping the next one would be more fuzzy. So yeah, I'll keep my eyes open for a DST-3, don't think I even heard of it until now, cheers.

On the subject of multi-effects: I dig em, they can sometimes be bought for less than single analog peds. But I plan to actually use these peds from time to time, give 'em a spot on the board I take outa the house and stuff...So these big contraptions are too much of a hassle

I have a soundtank Thrashmetal I got from hbomb.
It actually sounds pretty good, but it needs some EQing to help it. It has this cool asymmetrical clipping circuit with filter roll off thing going on, so even if the tone stack isn't the greatest, the actual distortion sounds pretty good.
So I use the black forest after it to make it sound betterer.
My brother is going to give me a MT2 he wound up with as well soon, so I'll be even more stoked to have some rad eq options and report back.
I think cheapo 80s and 90s Japanese pedals are gonna be the go here.
I really want to check out one of those Korgs now.
Edit: got my boss metal pedals ass backwards.

The Modern Fusion or the powerlead gets you there, both are similar in breakup but have more moreness, the thrash metal is best used with everything one 10 for that 90's black metal demo-tape sound. All the sound tank dirt pedals are cool, the only one I don't have is the crunchy rhythm

Old school DOD FX series pedals are your friend including the FX53 Classic Tube, FX50-B Overdrive Plus, two-knob FX55 Distortion, FX70-C Corrosion, FX86 Death Metal, and FX69 Grunge.

... and, in addition to other Ibanez Soundtank options mentioned, also consider the BN-5 Black Noise.

Old Boss DS1s were pretty trashy but now not cheap. Your 3 listed are classics, for sure. FZ2 was my first! DOD made a bunch of gain pedals that no one really wants anymore and can be found cheaply. Like the Grunge, which actually isn't as bad as the cringe factor implies. (CK3 beat me)

I saw a demo of this after spotting a cheap one on Reverb the other day and I was pretty surprised at the bang for buck. Impressive.

I would have also recommended the Punkifier, but have not found a cheap one (<$50) for many years. Most Reverb sellers seem to expect collectors' prices for a unit in decent working order with its battery cover intact (not sure if this is the case on eBay or if GC, Music Go Round, and Sam Ash offer better deals).

Either way, it's an amazing neopsych horn fuzz with blendable DOD 250 overdrive characteristics that can be articulate or super splatty.

I'm guessing they can be found relatively cheap nowadays, especially if a local store has a used one in stock. I previously owned one of their earlier multifx units, the ECC, which definitely meets the cheap, trashy, and old criteria in terms of gain textures.
