i can't find the way i used to have mine set so that it didn't make noise when you weren't playing but would do gradual screams without signal and without cutting out when touching the plate. driving me nuts. anyone has a setting suggestion, please bring it on.

I sold the one I loved a few years ago because it was too big and have ended up with a FF7.
FF's are super sensitive to the slightest change, whether it be input signal or slightest knob turn. Even a different cable with different capacitance can change the way it behaves.
Obviously, the gate has to be high for it to cut the noise while not playing. On the FF7, I find compression has to be turned up too.
Good luck finding that setting again. From experience, that's a bit of an ever-elusive quest.

Mine is noisy too. Maybe experiment with rolling back your guitar volume knob? (wild guess, mine is boxed up, on a shelf)

that's like the first thing instructed to do, have it turned down a bit.

This. Mine sometimes picks up radio broadcasts.
What an awesome pedal, though.
