Thank you thank you THANK YOU for all the kind comments. I record all this in my appartment with little or no feedback from anyone whatsoever, so it means a lot to me that you've listened to it.
Jared: The last part I wanted to do the cheesiest synth-guitar lead lines ever, a la Miami Vice, but you must be picking up on something because I was working out the Allman's "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" at the same time.
It's all done by me. Most of the drums are based on EZdrummer patterns, which I can't recommend highly enough. Ezdrummer actually sounds much better, I over compressed and added masses of reverb on purpose in order to get that "Elevator Jazz" sound. In the more freeform sections (like the breakdown at the end) it's me drumming live on a midi pad.
All the rest of the sounds, guitars, bass, organ, clavinet, etc, where made with my G&L and a fuckload of effects, all routed through a VHT Valvulator, into a Focusrite Sapphire interface into this crappy laptop. It was tracked in Ableton 8 and most of the guitars and effects were fed into various Amplitube models. Despite all the shit that's going on I don't think it's more than nine tracks, my crappy laptop can't take no more!!
As for the Mothers comparison, Jrmy, I owe you lunch, dinner and 32023 breakfasts. Zappa is my single biggest influence on EVERYTHING!!! I actually started with a vocal version of this in which the singer (You have to imagine the guy who plays "The Bunk" on "The Wire" dressed on a pink tracksuit... no really) well the singer arrives at the studio, where his "smooth jazz" backing tracks have been laid down for him to cream his pants and go all Al Jarreu over... And he of course ends up going all Yoko-Ono/Death Metal on us. I did one take of that and I nearly lost my voice, but shee--eeet, I'l try and do the vocal version if I can!
Oh, Derelicit-BOB. I'm even cheaper than the Church of the Subgenius. I've uploaded a good quality (certainly better than the shitty MySpace version) of the track here:
