I was about to buy this but realized there's no way to record and save your performance? Maybe through MIDI? .... i don't want to learn that though if so
I like the idea for live visuals... even when just playing at home... but i was hoping you could take a completed track or even something you're looping for fun, have this thing going on while making the tweaks available and recording it / saving it so you could create a fun little music video of sorts or cool cut ins but you can't unless i'm missing something.
Oh well... still pretty cool especially for anyone playing live.

yeah i think it would just be fun at home for sure and to make instavideos and cut screens.... and it says you can use it to make music videos but i'm a moron and don't see how. Do you plug it into your computer with the USB? If so then how do you "capture" the performance? Then you have to sync the audio to it in iMovie or something? Maybe it's MIDI?
Man, i'm a Midiot....

You plug it into a computer how, through USB? Do programs like iMovie just have a function to convert it into a video signal that you can just hit record on?
A MIDIOT I TELL YA!

It wouldn't be too hard to record, just do what the good dr said. I think thing would be amazing to use as a video source in an LZX modular system. I don't really want to pick up what's essentially a fancy itunes visualizer and use it on its own. It seems like a lot to pay for what's essentially a toy?

Yeah, that was the other reason I didn't grab it. There's a ton of options graphic wise but all very much the same aesthetic (1980's) and i'd like to be able to do more... really would like to create my own visuals but i don't even have enough time to make music so that's not happening.
Anyways, it's cool. I'd like it but i have a lot of other things i could put much more use to for $500 right now. Maybe i'll pick up a used one eventually.
.......... or maybe i'll buy it in an hour.

Also, it doesn't have any kind of analog video output, so it couldn't easily be integrated into a modular video synth later on. You'd have to use an hdmi to rca converter...
If you want a used one, I'd wait a month or so and pick one up. All the initial hype should've died down by then and there'll be a bunch of used ones available for relatively cheap. That is, depending on the current demand. I also think people who buy this are going to be the kind of people who collect gear and never sell it.

Computer based things I've been looking at: Lumen, synesthesia.live, and Zwobot Max

Critter & Guitari is the Melania Trump of music manufacturing. Move the fuck out of New York and start saving the people some serious dough.

Well, the other way to look at it is that actually hiring a human to animate things for you or
paying a person to create live-improvised visuals in sync to your music is expensive.
With that same $500 you would only get maybe a 3- to 5-minute animation (depending on
the market). Hire some animator living in NYC and I'm not sure what $500 would get you.
On the other hand, human improvisation would be personalized and un-reproducible and
custom and you'd be supporting another artist by collaborating with them. Whereas this
has a circumscribed set of variables and options and although it is reacting to your audio
in real time (cool) it is doing so in a finite set of ways, and will only ever stay within that
spectrum of predetermined reactions.
This is definitely no "Oskar Fischinger in a box" type of a device.
