so we've got our desk swivel chair thread, but how about a thread for chairs and couches for your clients and friends to sit on when recording or hanging out in your studio? not looking to spend an arm and a leg but it's gotta be comfortable for friends of all sizes from kitty cats to andre the giant types. armless is preferred for chairs coz arms get in the way of playing guitar, as for a couch it needs to be on the short side. but i do wanna see what you guys use, that usually helps me figure out what i wanna do.

Monitoring this thread. You know from experience that I need to step my chair game up.

i've got a chair i could give you to replace that really beat up one. but with some rearranging we could totally fit a small couch/futon in your shed studio.

The best studio couches I've had the pleasure of using are old shitty couch found on a curb in the 70s with super low arms and cushions you almost fall through. In general, I'd say match the vibe of the couch to the vibe of your studio. Plus money is better spent on the recording gear than the gear your on while recording

brown. everything is brown. the walls are tan. my bedroom is my studio, my bedding it blue and brown lol. good point though; it's worth spending the cash on a chair for yourself but yeah i need to get some outboard gear, new soundproofing for my isolation room, etc...

I would look on Craigslist for a used one in good condition, and buy a fancy one at a steep discount. People sell furniture cheap when they're moving. A leather couch at 75% off, get something like that IMO. I wanted a new couch a few years ago, and looked at nice ones (overstuffed) and they are rather expensive. I bought one on Craigslist instead.

I have a 2+3 seater leather group. Got em both for less than 100$ in good quality and solidly built, only needed a little grease. I'm sure you'd be able to do a similar score if you look on Craiglist or whatever. Leather couches have the advantages of being resistant to liquids and most stains, and you won't have to worry about the millions of skincells in the upholstery if you buy used.

Just give em a play station and couch will be irrelevant.

Definitely. We'll crunch on it more during the upgrades.

Levity time, i make music on the worst chair.

Photo album of chair with details of the pants destroying nails. When you hit one of those nails you better hope you were wearing pants though.

yeah that's the worst chair I've ever seen. I got a pretty basic wooden chair for like $2 at a thrift store in tacoma last year - needed one for my desk. no nails or anything. looks like it was part of a dining table set or something.

if you buy any used couches just like flip it up and have a look underneath to see if there's any wood cracking apart or something. lots of stuff is made of such shitty wood now. also once I bought the smelliest couch from someone I work with - luckily I couldn't fit it into my apartment so they let me have my money back. this thing was leaving smudges on the wall where it touched.

Just a quick heads-up: Those couches have a tendency to make your ass (and esophagus somehow?) hurt pretty badly. Expect to be walking funny a couple of days after you've sat on one.

I heard Kim Thayil hauled his own couch into the studio to record Superunknown on it.

That's all I have to contribute.
Based on that alone, couches are a good move in a studio.
