So I have my first Synth machine coming (Microbrute) and I want to immerse myself in some synthy shiz

Of course I know Tim Hecker...Alessandro Cortini ...Eno...but I need more!

Who are the "musts" when it comes to synth?

It's a bit like asking for guitar music without giving more pointers...

But anyway : Pan Sonic (or Mika Vainio's solo stuff), Fuck Buttons, Blanck Mass, Boards of Canada for example.

Also, I saw Alessandro Cortini play "live" last week (my first concert since my son was born) and even though it sounded great I was quite a bit disappointed by the performance, as he mostly played songs from cassettes on a 4-tracks recorder... I really liked videos I've seen of his performances based on one synth + some effects, as he's really good at getting great stuff out of this kind of setups and hoped to get some of this but nope... 4-tracks recorder. I guess this was because this material was more complex than the "one synth" albums but still... :idk:

Thanks everyone. This will get me started.

I've heard that before...that Cortini's live performance often leaves something to be desired.

Skinny Puppy! The first synth band that blew me away as a lad.

Old school synthy yet timelessly fresh and odd

I'm surprised to hear people didn't like Cortini's performances. I saw him live last year and it was probably one of the best performances I've ever experienced. His music was amazing and borderline overwhelming. The venue may have helped a little too though:

The Stranger Things soundtrack has some amazing synth in it.
Ben Frost and Roly Porter are pretty great/somewhat similar to Tim Hecker
A lot of Trent Reznor's soundtracks are pretty good listening. Also NIN's Ghosts album is one of my favourites.
