Went from all boutique to mostly Boss

Recently came to the realization that there is nothing wrong with Boss pedals. Actually, some of those old 80's-90's pedals are classics. It started with a FZ-2 taking my boutique superfuzz off the board, and now has expanded to a CS-2, HM-2 and BF-3 replacing the boutiques. While I am down with some boutique pedals, Boss just sound so right and grab onto my signal so well. Plus, for me boutique's have jumped the shark. Who cares about the midrange frequencies from an NOS russian germanium, silicon whatever. Are we players or are we curators of some tone snob museum?

I feel like we're being baited here...But I'll bite anyways.

No shame in enjoying Boss. Each one of us has our own gear preferences.

I won't buy Boss because
A) I hate how they look. Yes, I have pedal vanity.
B) I like supporting small companies/builders and buying Boss feels like eating at McDonald's ...

Moreover on B..."boutique" isn't a word I like a ton when discussing pedals. I'm new here, too...but in my short time I've already been able to speak with a couple of the builders on here and give them my business...and I enjoy that exchange very much. It's just as much about art for me really...plugging in something a guy made on his own in his small shop has this element of magic to it. Fully aware this sounds pretentious and I don't give a fuck.

There's a difference between companies like Spaceman (not trying to start a riot here...) who use that "super rare, Jesus came on these transistors and I walked 50,000 miles to find them so I'll charge you $500 for a Fuzz pedal" rhetoric and other companies who put their blood sweat and tears into their work and offer them to us at steals of a price.

If avoiding Boss and buying from "the little guy" makes me a Tone snob then I happily accept the title.

You're not being baited at all. Your post is totally welcome and thanks for it. I disagree with a lot of what you say, but I get it. I went thru a massive boutique phase in the last few years, so it's not like I don't appreciate a nice handmade pedal. And I too enjoyed a lot of the dealings I had with the boutique guys. I just don't see the point, however, of being militant about supporting "the little guy." After all, they're in business just like Boss is and their main goal, at the end of the day, is getting your money just like Boss is. Yeah, it's fun to get an email about how "stoked" they are they you're playing their "rad" pedal, but at the end of the day, it's all about dollars to the vast majority of these guys. Plus, what's up with waiting 3 months for a pedal to be made?

At the end of the day, I realized that the off-the-shelf simplicity, road-worthiness and musicality of so many older Boss pedals warranted a second look from me. I'm glad I did too. I just figure that so many people are trying to clone the HM-2's, CE-2's of the world, why not just play the original one?

I think I'd rather be "militant" about that than a lot of other things. There aren't too many things really worth being militant about though.

That's a huge oversimplification.

There's a lot of love here for Boss. People fortunately don't really snob out too much, so openly enjoy em all you want :)*

Was just saying in another thread that I've been dying for a Dimension C forever. Need to pull that trigger. Also want an LS-2. And a Super Feedbacker / Distortion.

Most Boss pedals are just too vanilla for me and what I like making. It's like asking for a sledgehammer and getting a squeaky plastic hammer. There are some good ones, like the RVs and DDs, but where the oscillating fuzzes at???

Fair enough bro. Luckily the music I am making doesn't require an oscillating fuzz. I'd actually like to hear music that is made with an oscillating fuzz. If you have any examples, please post.

I love Boss stuff too. The entire PS series, the DD series, I LOVE my PN-2, loads of people here like the RV's. They do have an element of effortlessness to them, they just work straight away, no fuss. I DO think they're ugly as sin though. Just stick the innards in a 1590B with standard stomp switch and I'd be happy.

I said music ;) . While I can't identify at all with what I heard on the bandcamp site, I guess some people would call that music. To me it just sounded like the bleatings of kids who were all given 5th place trophies and told whatever they did was "special" and "unique."
