How do these work, and what do they sound like? Are they like Tape Echos? Anyone have a Disk Echo unit?

Apparently they are like tape echos, but use a spinning magnetized disk to create the echos...

i have a Tel Ray electrostatic disk echo and 2 different "rotating sound synthesizers"..(which are "sorta" leslie/univibe sounding).

they definitely have a individual sound that's unique...you can hear the motor turning on the echo, and it goes into a fantastic motorized feedback that's easy to control. sounds like nothing else out there for sure.
the rotating sound synth doesn't have much control over the rate or depth. it does one thing and does it in a very kool way but is noisy as well. although the noise really adds to the sound as it's soooo mechanical. i really like them but haven't dug them out in a while. hard to keep working due to weather change.
ry cooder is a big fan of the disk echo.

I bought a binson echorec at a estate sale for $100 sent it to Binson and had it repaired. I used it for about 3 months when I was in a pink floyd cover band then sold it for $3200. I had lots of fun with it and the Echos are amazing (one of these days) but 3200 is nothing to sneeze at. I cant wait for someone to make an echo that sounds remotely like it.

There were basically 3 echoes back in the day. Not counting swimming pools, bathrooms, caves and stock tanks.
Tape, disk and drum in oil. They all sound different and the feedback has a whole different feel to it than with an analog delay.
Then there is what they do to your sound when the echo is off, which is why the sell for so much now.
