Which is better? I like speakers to have a bit of thump rather than excessive highs. Opinions much appreciated.

greenbacks and vintage 30s are mid range machines. also the greenback handles 20-30 watts depending on the model while vintage 30s are rated for about 60 or 70 watts. the vintage 30s are also a fair bit more sensitive than the greenbacks. as for having ice pick highs, depends quite a bit on the amp as well. what kind of amp so you have?

I love the vintage 30s in my Orange PPC412, but as Walt said, depends a lot on the amp. Creambacks are also an option for more wattage w/Greenback character.

Yeah, totally depends on the amp. Having said that though, back when I had a jcm 800 2204, I didn't particularly care for the greenbacks in my 4x12 cab (not enough oomph/lows), and I wasn't too crazy about my AC30CC and AC15C2 either. I think I don't really like those Voxes though, regardless of the speakers
But yeah, given the choice for most kinds of amps, and most kinds of rock: Vintage 30s. There was *something* that needed to be mellowed out in my 4x12 V30 cab though, which was solved beatifully by replacing two of 'em with a pair of G12h30's

I had an AC15 with greenbacks and never particularly cared for them. It always sounded a little frail? Not sure how to describe it. Anyway, I didn't like them, but as mentioned above, it might be the AC15 I didn't like rather than just the speakers.

I've always thought V30s were a recipe for icepicks. Swapped mine for eminence Texas heats and love them. They don't break up easily either which is rad. Because speaker breakup sucks

greenbacks paired with g12t-75s in a 4x12 is pure sex btw. and without a really forgiving amp v30s can be crazy harsh. luckily both my hellhawk and v-4 absolutely slam my v30 loaded 2x12. i love speaker breakup, i also love a good clean and sensitive speaker. the v30 does both for me.

It also depends on the cab size and type. greenbacks have lots of thump in smaller closed cabs that other speakers like vintage 30's and those shitty things Marshall used in the 80's sound tinny and harsh. Also Depends on your amp. I got a really small marshall 1x10 cab last week and got a green back for it cuz the stock speaker sucked. and it sound huge, we even tested running a 60's silver face princeton through in and it was amazing how much tighter and fuller it was than the stock jensen in the combo, which really shows that that nasally sound some fenders get is more to do with speakers than you would think.

good point. my 2x12 is a tall oversize cab that's only 12" deep.

Sorry for delay in replying! I have a Vox night train combo with a Celestion Greenback G12M and have just picked up a LH50 Laney with 2x12 cab - but have yet to see the Laney cab as I bought it by proxy, my mate lived nearby and got it. The seller claims it has Celestions in it but I suspect they're H&H speakers.
