Breath controllers - anyone have experience with them?

I saw one for sale on craigslist (Yamaha BC-3) and it kind of reminded me that such gear exists and the possibilities of how they can be used.
Have any of you used a breath controller? The BC-3 has a 1/8'' stereo tip. Is that typical for breath controllers? How would I hook this or others like it up to a MIDI source so I can control VSTs and the like? How do they perform, in your experience. Are they like difficult to control? I wouldn't necessarily be using one to play an instrument and thus I don't care if it doesn't "track" perfectly or is hard to control. I'd maybe try and use it for sound effects or maybe see how it reacts as a controller for triggering.

I have a BC-1 that came with the CS01II I got used, but unfortunately it doesn't work. It's even impossible to screw or pry open to see what's going on inside, I'm tempted to just take a hammer to it. 1/8" stereo plug, yes.
Only conversion thing I've seen is a little box made by Midi Solutions, BUT it costs $200.

I came into this thread expecting something about auto-erotic asphyxiation.

You may find some of this useful.

Marshall Allen's been using an EVI wind controller for years. Not quite the same thing, but it's awesome:
