This has me so fucking mad. Its like this jackass has never spent more than 15 minutes researching music on the internet. He has his head so far up his own ass that he could probably make a better show touring that than his own music (not that its a far step away).

formulaic, made-to-please, vegan restaurant patron-type shit.
Sounds like he doesn't like p4k either heh.
Never cared about him or NIN, now I have a good reason.

I like his music but this is really dumb, just sounds like he's mad about people saying things on the internet with a touch of 'back in my day'. Who cares?
Not more annoying than Corgan though.

I think he's got something of a point, tbh.
There are also some qualifiers I would add to his statement though.

People have been making formulaic music since music and people were talking shit before social media.
Go be a bitter old dude with Jack White.

Same.
Most notably being that Reznor is probably not tapped into the places where rad music is likely happening. I dont know the dudes life, but I dont really see him going to basement shows and DIY spaces with his public profile.

Are there any easier targets than social media (and, by extension, plebeian masses)? I think it's dumb, too but it 1) seems kinda safe and old-hat to criticize even if it's probably correct and 2) kinda objectivist considering his standing.
The common argument is 'aren't people dumb/don't they have bad taste/politics/moral formations?' Cheah.

I read it as
The drums aren't beefy enough for him.
Something something all sizzle, no steak.
Remove yourself from my lawn
He has a point, but it's the kind of point a childless, slightly inebriated uncle makes at a holiday gathering and everyone glares at him for an awkward moment of silence.
Not a chance he's more annoying than Corgan, who takes pretense to a level capable of making even P4k blush.

Fix'd.
I cant get over this interview still.
I spent a good portion of my evening debating the turdliness of Mr Reznor on facebook with the kind of douche who adds you on facebook despite never having met, then invites you to like his band, and doesnt like yours when you return the invite after giving them an arbitrary like. (Seriously, that shit pisses me off, like, a lot.)

Yeah I'm gonna have to situate myself on this side of the fence.
And its not like he hasnt put out "safe" music within the context of his fanbase, either, but the "everyone is a critic" thing i can grasp.
Having said that, BACK IN MY DAY, you didnt give a shit what anyone thought. If people though your band sucked then you consoled yourself by sayig "they just dont get it, man".

I think the internet has been a paradigm shift in terms of creativity.
The good stuff, the really creative stuff is not created from influences, its created in a vacuum where the artist can curl up in his head and come up with stuff that is unique and individual.
I think creativity exists to fill a void and in a sense there are no voids any more because its all filled up readily with media/information/entertainment from the internet.
I don't know if his point that nothing interesting exists anymore because people are afraid of taking risks. In fact, I think it would be much much easier to take risks these days because no one makes any money anymore doing this kind of thing. Maybe in the 90s you could do this and live in a hovel and eat baloney sandwiches every day, you can't do that these days. A risk would have to have some possible negative fallout...doesn't seem realistic that people are inhibited because someone gives them a thumb down on their youtube music video that has 200 views. I do kind of agree that there isn't much interesting stuff out there anymore. This might be the old man yelling at clouds/everything was better in the past cliche or it might be something different. The internet is something I think has far more impact on people than things like TV, Radio.
I hear music on both pop radio and the more indie stuff, the pop stuff seems very much by the numbers, and the indie stuff is more people parroting the past and their influences than coming up with their own thing.
I don't think entertainment has ever had something like the current day where so much of it is rehashing stuff from the past. Maybe they stylize it a bit different but the ideas are not original or creative.
Every movie seems to be a remake, reboot, prequel, sequel.
I think if you really wanted to be creative, you would disconnect from the internet and go live in a cave for at least 10 years.
Kim Gordon said no one liked being around Billy Corgan because he was a cry baby. And Pretentious. The remark about being pretentious from Kim Gordon makes her annoying too.
