Cool sounds, especially when you kicked on the tremor

But am I missing something, or is there actually no "bitcrush" knob on this bitcrusher? Looks like there is just variable samplerate from the sequencer.. No way to vary the bitdepth?

the amount of crush is done by turning the dials for each stages, full clockwise its so crushed it cuts the sound and anti clockwise is almost not there.

The stage dials (the ones that light up) sound very much like samplerate reduction, which is a feature of most bitcrushers. But it doesn't sound at all like bitcrushing to me.

Here's what I mean, on another bitcrusher pedal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNtJ7jsffn0

After a minute, the demo guy starts varying the sameplrate, which is what the lateral sounds hex sounds like (+ sequencer). But there is also a crush knob, which does actual bitcrushing. He starts playing with it 1:40 in, and it can sound like harsh digital fuzz, vinyl crackling, white noise, a speaker on fire, etc..

If lateral sound don't actually call it a bitcrusher, then that's fine too! In that case it's an awesome sequenced samplerate reducer! :) I just didn't hear bitcrushing in the demo, and I dont see a knob for it. Like I said, the stage knobs sound exactly like samplerate reduction.

ok so i messaged jon from lateral to be sure and each stage control is a crush knob, they control the sample rate of each stage.

They both reduce the bitdepth and samplerate at the same time? If so, it would be interesting to know how many bits. 8bit? 10? 12?

I think I'll wait until it's out of prototype phase so that more info is available. Samplerate reduction and crush (bitcrushing) are two different things.

Sorry for the questions if they seem weird or probing. I'm way too passionate about bitcrushers. I've owned a few, and have built several. Every new effect of this type grabs my attention.

Thanks again for the video!

no problem at all! if you like Bit crushers check out the Lateral "Bit"

This sounds like a misunderstanding.

Bitcrushing is more and more used to make sample rate reducing sound more appealing, especially in the guitar pedal world. This is just a case of that. There is no crushing in that sound.

One of the tell tale signs of significant bit crushing is a significant rise in the noise floor which you don't hear here.

This may be doing some bitcrushing, but the main effect going on is a sample rate reduction.

Still a cool pedal, just mislabeled.

It's also worth noting that this isn't Lateral Sound being uniquely (or purposefully) misleading -- effects people call SRR "bitcrushing" all the time.

Again, not truly a bit crusher.
Lateral Sound wrote:Analogue bitcrusher? An oxymoron maybe but it’s the simplest description of what Bit is and does. Maybe sample-rate-reducer might be better, but it still doesn’t give you much of a picture of what Bit will do to your guitar. Essentially, it mimics digital distortion and low-fi digital sound (think 80s video games and your getting there), then it does so much more.
There are a few techniques used to achieve that sound while remaining analog, usually rapid sample and hold or even ring modulation. Sounds cool as hell and has the advantage of remaining analog. Check out the Sonic Reducer from Parasit if you want to learn how to build something similarly.

This is very much the case.

Also, to be briefly on topic: that pedal sounds pretty fucking cool, misnomer aside.

I tried but I can't help it -- it must be referenced.

If you haven't seen it you really need to look at Behnders' 'review' of his experience with the Luck Duck 8 Bit:
