It sounds like ATDI.

Apparently they're planning more new music and a world tour? Jim's not on board though, so I'm not as interested.

I feel astoundingly neutral about it, but I'll listen to the new album.

Was a huge fan of everything ATDI/TMV up to and including Bedlam in Goliath. Couldn't get into this one.

The title "Governed by contagions" is dumb, and the resulting chorus is just as dumb. Seemed a bit ill-conceived, like an unintentional self-parody of themselves (the chorus at least). It was almost as if the Cedric just threw lyrics at the wall, sung them the first way he could think of, and concluded "this is good enough" without taking the time to reflect on whether his vocal parts not only fit into the song (which they do), but were also worthwhile (not so much). Like he phoned it in. However, maybe I'm just an asshole armchair critic who loves the smell of his own farts. Just wasn't for me.

This is definitely influenced by the fact that it was a lyrics video though. It almost ALWAYS puts me off a song (with the exception of Weird Al's "Word Crimes"). The lyrics displayed on the screen inevitably reek of self-importance when presented this way. At least, that's the effect it has on me. And combine that with Cedric's lyrical style, it only exacerbates the problem.

Having said that, the actual music is on point. Definitely keen to hear the rest of the album. Cedrics vocals on each track will inevitably make/break any individual track for me unfortunately. He's a damn good vocalist, but he very easily gets on my nerves.

Listening to it again after cranking ATDI all day - I think it's just the chorus that bothers me. Every time I hear the phrase "Governed by contagions" I sing this song in my head:

Otherwise, the song's all good. Not as good as their old stuff, but certainly not bad. More optimistic about the rest of the record now.

Drums are deffo better than older ATDI. Guitar work seems like a natural outgrowth from RoC...Cedric is a little bolder/more annoying here. He seemed legit crazy on their last two records, and a little more measured on the new songs.

Smells like ATDI, but it's gonna be hard to get back to earlier high points.

Weird to not be totally psyched about a new record, though, for sure. Maybe because we've all had tons of output from most of the members since the breakup already?

It's the singing lessons, I think.

Agreed with the roach on the chorus.

I don't know if I'm neutral on it or think it just sucks. Like, it can go either way.

I'm stoked because I absolutely loved ATDI way back when, and honestly still holds up well for me today. But I can't escape the feeling that I think this song just sort of sucks. Agreed on the lyrics are awful part, jesus it's so bad here.

The lyrics/vocals piss me off as well. He's always used needlessly complex language, but the vocals on this recording have so much more clarity that it really becomes obvious. Lyrically it sounds like someone tried to write a song that sounded like Relationship of Command without actually bothering to see if the lyrics made any sense. But I think if the vocals were a bit more chaotic and urgent sounding, like they used to be, the lyrics would fit just fine, like they used to. On this song it just sounds like some dude is quickly reading some fucked up English professor mad libs.

This sounds like they're not on anywhere near enough drugs.

If they played this on live TV, I bet it would be in tune and everything. Unacceptable.

Still love 'em though. Saw them in 2000. It was carnage. They were pretty awul. Well, Cedric and Omar were awful. Rhythm section was solid. Cedric's strict anti-mosh policy was weird, because he's twatting about on stage, twisting and balling up like his spinal chord was made of jam. Then he gives the audience shit if they even so much as sway from side to side.

Yup. There's the rub. Vocal recording & enunciation is a lot clearer. It draws attention to the psychobabble. The extremely heavy emphasis on "piss ants" was kinda dumb too.

The verses were alright, and the prechorus was kiiiiiiinda okay. But I've never been a fan of the type of nasily voicing he uses in the chorus of this, and the chorus of metatron etc. It's been his bread-and-butter for a while now - his "go-to" style. And often it works - but the lyrics have to actually be on point, because it emphasizes them quite a lot. So if they're bad, they're baaad. If you don't enjoy the lyrics, it kinda shits on the whole song.

If he sung that "governed by contagions" part in a different style - especially his signature ATDI "fuck my vocal chords" style - it would work. They're lyrics that require attitude, not enunciation.

May seem nitpicky. But just trying to work out & describe why I wasn't much of a fan of this one.

Yah the comments on vocal styling help explain a lot...he's never gonna be a technical singer, so trading on swagger and insanity are a better idea/fit (and more appealing in my opinion).
