Best Walkman/portable cassette player?

I seem to have started a small cassette collection, but I'd like to bring the music along with me. Are there any new models/brands out there worth checking out, or is it best to stick to the tried and true in-your-face yellow Walkmans of old?

Haha, I just got a walkman today from digdugDIY. It's sweet, an old Sony WM-FX21.

Rip cassettes to computer?

Rip anything to computer? I tend to give the music more attention when it's on CD/vinyl/tape than I do when I just hit play on VLC/Spotify. Might be the ritual of it all. Might be not being able to just skip around (CD excluded). Plus, when I get cassettes of not-so-easy-to-find music, I'd like to use the actual cassette rather than just transferring and chucking it in the bin. :idk:

I mean I have an honest-to-god dual tape deck in my home listening setup, so I don't throw them away (but obvi this isn't super portable).

I used to have an Aiwa , it was pretty good. If I were to buy one now I'd probably check digdugDIY first like Eivind, or try to find a clean walkman on ebay. Only portable thing I have right now is an ancient Panasonic discman that serves as my at-home CD player. No music on the go for me these days, because I always drive.

I grew up with walkman, still have a couple old Walkman wm-fx101 and wm-f2015 that are still pretty flawless after 30 years. If you don't need to use headphones..or maybe you could mod..this old portable Fisher Price Tape player/recorder is the business. Has a built in mic and spkr, man I've recorded so many great things with this lovely both at home and on the go.

I don't know what's good or decent, last time I used one was an Aiwa and it was gorgeos as fuck, 20 years ago.

The last one I had was an Aiwa too. Loved it 20 years ago, but not sure how it actually stacked up. God, now I'm gassing for walkmans and children's cassette recorders.

I bought this one in the late '90s and it was by far the best cassette player I have owned:

Sony Walkman WM-EX662. Terrific sound and solid quality. Plus a very cool design IMO.

This is a good thread, I want one too. Although I only have 3 cassettes:

Folk Songs from Bavaria
Ukranian Christmas carols
Dilbert and the Way of the Weasel

This is the one I had growing up. Ruled.

Recently went to an art exhibition at a museum here in Austin about the 90s, and they had Walkmen available with various mix tapes. It was pretty great. Amazingly enough I got the very same model. Flashback would be a big understatement :)*
