Tell me about video synths 2.0 - the forbidden knowledge

Let's try this again. I'm really interested in video synths but have no idea where to start. Really interested in things with audio in and not in something with severe limitations like the teenage engineering op-z.
I was starting to get on the path but then resincum shut that party down faster than a rookie campus pd walking into his first college bar.
So what do y'all use or what do y'all want?

They're pretty simple, but the Critter & Guitari Video Scope/Rhythm Scope look like fun, easy plug & play for live shows.

I've got mazetools and it's fun, but I have no clue what I'm doing with it.

That was rad!
Now I'm GASing for video-controllers!

App looks kind of neat. Not sure if it's $100 neat to me -- but this thread isn't totally for me...
I'll see myself out.

I guess I'm waiting for more advanced digital, since what I've seen so far is less than what I wanted and expected from it. Photoshop/After Effects, 3D and detailed cartoon animation are the takeoff points for the type of video synthesis I want. The basic retro stuff is nice, but should just be a small one of many greater capabilities IMO.

If I had the soldering skills, I'd start building a modular synth setup with those LZX kits. I'n the meantime, I'll probably just start saving up for a good eurorack case and one of LZX's Visual Cortex modules. This is a visual cortex, a video mixer, and an ms-20 mini:

I bought an audio/video synth thing from Gijs Gieskes some time ago but I still haven't bought a small monitor for it. I have to set it up so that it's next to or above the modular and make my own minimal visuals when playing (either the modular directly or other instruments through my A119)...

if you want to go the digital route, there is a program that is fucking insane for mac. can do rutt etra, crazy glitch effects, lofi as well as crisp mixing/cutting. you need a powerhouse computer to run it tho and a midi controller. waiting to hear back from my friend about the name.. although after getting him into the analog stuff, he prefers it now as it's not so cookie cutter. it's kind of organic vs just pressing a button and knowing what's going to happen.
if you go the analog route like T+ or BPMC, you'll need a TBC (time base corrector) or else it will drop out all the time. you won't get much out of it unless you're running it into tube tvs. you'll also need an analog to digital converter. if you go the T+ route and want to start with one of the cheaper options, I recommend the vortex decoder vs opti glitch. opti glitch is kind of a bitch to use//better for complimenting a set up than standalone. took me a while to appreciate it.
logan of t+ is working on a pedal unit; it has like 5 different stomps and each trigger a diff bend.. supposedly working on a unit with cv implementation as well.

Two more programs you might want to consider.
1. VDMX
Fairly steep learning curve but it has all the bells and whistles
http://vdmx.vidvox.net
2.ArKaos VJ-DJ
Bit lower committment to learning and faster fun.

I have used both about 6 years ago. I am sure they have improved but still it is not quite plug and play.
I emailed the lumens app and received a reply that direct midi control of the app is coming. This would mean a couple of things.
1. You could dedicate a controller to it and just trip out.
2. You could just trip out with the controller and record the midi to something like ableton for easy playback.
For me this is the real option. I could easily trigger patches from ableton with a floor controller allowing me to concentrate on music in a live situation. In the end it's a trade off if you want to play music and have cool but lesser videos you could use lumen. If you are going to concentrate on the video then either of the above would be better. One thing to remember is that you could use any video source with lumen - so in that way sky is the limit... cameras, quicktime etc.
have fun.
