Remember when Opeth didn't suck?

I was just listening to the remix of Deliverance, and apparently Opeth is trying to make sure the answer to "remember when we didn't suck" is a unanimous "NO".

Yeah, I get it. Recording deliverance was a nightmare and Andy Sneap saved everything from being a shit heap (potentially the only rad thing Andy Sneap has done). But the record sounded good. It was dry and brutal and stubborn in its vision (regardless of whether Opeth had a vision recording it, the record as a whole stands out from the rest of their discog and in my ears has a clear aural connection/thread/story).

But this remix sounds like someone has thrown one of Ã…kerfeldt's prog cardigans on the whole recording, which makes the whole listening experience (and even how I hear the songs) a whole lot worse. The mixing and mastering just does not gel with the material at all. But still, the remix has somehow gotten rave reviews.

:idk:

This is a completely meaningless rant (though I'm pretty happy with my SPACE-esque subject), but the odds of someone engaging in a discussion about this, or at least posting a picture of jwar's buttcheeks or a LOLcat or something are a much brighter prospect than trying to have this same rant in my everyday life..

No.

*reads post*

No.

Ok, Original:

Remix:

Granted, this is Youtube, but as someone who's never listened to the album before it seems like they just went for that 'instrumental clarity/separation' kind of mix that the kids these days (?) dig.

I'm not going to watch a recent remix.
Don't care.

I was actually going to start a thread like this when I heard the local radio station do their new music program and preview the new single. I was bored with it weeks ago and it's even more boring now.
The problem with this new effort is not that it sucks, it's just that it's so bland.
Technically it is brilliant, but it's the same album for the third time in a row.
I loved Heritage as I thought it would be a one off departure. The folky, quiet reflective side of Opeth could surely yield a beautiful classic prog styled baby? And it does, and they did it. Masterfully.
But there are two major issues with following it up with the same thing.
1) We've heard it all before.
Seriously, there is a sea of classic rock, prog, stoner and kraut bands out there that have been doing this for quite some time. Heritage was a great contribution to this sort of genre worship, just leave it at that.
2) Opeth failed to progress.
Heritage is a great point to redefine a band. An excellent point to do something different, stop, assess direction and maybe have a conversation like, "oh hey we fuckin pwned death metal, make badass dark acoustic works and can hammer this 70s shit out pretty good. What else can we do that'd be rad to gun for? Surely we could make a massive(r) contribution to heavy music here and maybe even come up with some new shit?"
But no, they decided three albums of dad rock wears the way to go.

My problem with the new record is that it doesn't suck (if I was in some dank band and I wrote it, it'd be rad as fuck) but that it is just underwhelmingly boring and played out when the potential for so much more is there.

sounds like they added a bunch of big fake reverb to the drums on that Deliverance remix. i agree that it sucks & kind of ruins that record.

It sort of sounds like the reverb is already there in the original it's just not given 3,000 miles of space.

I couldn't find a good upload on yt but if you have Spotify with the good Bitrate it sounds pretty different. I think it's a new plugin on the drums.

That playlist I listed can go to 1080p but it mostly sounds 'more dimensional' to my ears. You could be right though?

Didn't i already make a thread about this? I thought I did. Wasn't it called "MAKE OPETH GOTH AGAIN"??? Either way they have been fucking terrible for a long time.

Where we disagree though is that I believe their last album worth a shit was MAYH.

Yeah, this thread is just venting at that stupid remix. But I'm all for general opeth spleen venting, because their older stuff was so righteous, and as Popey points out they are still capable of producing great stuff but apparently are too busy trying to be the Bruce Springsteen of "progressive" metal.

I actually think Still Life was superior to MYAH, but MYAH through Deliverance (I don't get the hate for that album) are pretty unimpeachable for my money. The first two were good but MYAH was where they got their shit together.

Blackwiener Park was aight i guess.....but when they stopped being goth was definitely a turning point in the musical quality.

I mean my opinion here has to be taken with big bowl of salt as I actually like progressive dadcore, but there's a fucking limit to that shit.

I just can't stand the ADD-genre of metal, where they take good riffs and then discard them forever after 4 bars.

Not everything has to be a 60 minute reflection on 3-6 notes, you know.
