What do you guys think makes a good anime st? I think some soundtracks elevate anime from alright to good or from good to perfect.

Like Revolutionary Girl Utena, each duel has its own song, which pushes the fights to a way more dynamic direction. I mean, I has 8 CDs worth of soundtrack, but mn is it so worth it. It does so much with the music that listen through the CDs the scenes just pop out vividly. I remember one of the episodes ran longer than the others, so they rerecorded the ending song i nthe style of the fight themes, it was a huge oh shit moment carried by the music, and no other anime has made me pay attention to the songs like it has.

Other than that the Durarara soundtrack is fantastic, although the songs represent individual characters rather than scenes.

My all time favourite anime soundtrack as a whole, bar none:

Probably the main reason Boogiepop is one of my favourite series. It would probably have been really underwhelming otherwise (short, weird ending, animation has aged badly) but the way the music shaped the atmosphere was pretty incredible, I thought. Especially considering it's a bunch of tracks by different artists which are all electronic but are really varied. I don't often listen to soundtracks start to finish but this one gets played a shit ton.

Other shows i thought the music played an especially notable role in:
Elfen Lied (excellent use of theme and variation)
Black Bullet (not a great show really, but really weird and effective experimental breakcore-ish electronica)
Gosick (all around good show regardless but the music was so lush and didn't recycle tracks too much, always set the perfect mood)
Mawaru Penguindrum (flawless OP/ED's, weird-ass recurring theme songs out of nowhere, just instantly memorable)
The Garden of Sinners
Mushi-shi
Rozen Maiden
Strawberry Panic

Mawaru Penguindrum was directed by the same person that did Utena, Kunihiko Ikuhara.
Rozen Maiden's music is done by Shinkichi Mitsumune, who also did music for Utena (alongside Ikuhara and J.A Seazer.)
