Why do we eat stuff that just makes us sick?

I can't figure it out. All of my friends make fun of me for trying to eat... healthy? It's not so much healthy as natural, and I'm sick of being sick

Last night my parents cooked steak. I felt HORRIBLE after eating it. Like I do after eating beef... I didn't feel like doing anything. I was in a bad mood because I was sick. Tonight, we're eating basically the same shit. The reasoning is that it's cheaper... because the thing she gets the recipes from is based on what's on sale. Thing is, nobody was cooking dinner before! We're buying food we weren't buying before. How is that saving money? We used to just keep some fruit, salads, sandwich meat, whatever around. I used to live off of spinach salads, black beans, brown rice, chicken, fish, etc... now I eat so many refined foods, so much beef... I've gained wait! In like 2 weeks. It's ridiculous.

My dad is sick, and he eats sooo much candy, cake, pie, whatever. I can't convince him that his diet could be a lot of the problem. Between that and the smoking (my asshole brother gave him cigarettes while he was trying to quit) and the meds he needs to get off of... it's ridiculous. But nobody wants to hear it from me. The food tastes too good... fuck how it makes you feel. I don't understand.

I once went to the grocery store with my friends. And they made fun of the fact I would buy the expensive stuff-- often organic, if I can find it (usually Publix is good for that, as far as supermarkets go)... not taking into account the fact I wouldn't eat nearly as much as they do. They were buying cheese... talking about how I'd buy the "7 dollar bag." Correction... I wouldn't buy it. I'd add some more peppers, lettuce, whatever. I'd buy the expensive beef... again, no, I wouldn't.

So, here's the thing... am I weird for actually wanting to eat real food? For not wanting to over eat? For learning to cook things I like without all the shit that just makes people fat and sick?

It seems so ridiculous... make fun of what I eat... but complain about being sick. Fuckers...

I'm a vegetarian so I can see where you are coming from, I was a chef for 2 years, cook most of my family meals etc and no you are not wrong, please god ignore them for being so arogant.

Ok you don't need organic, infact ignore that, it's just pricey food but buying normal veg, yeah it's alot cheaper than meat... healthier too, fish is cheaper than meat too... also healthier (although I don't eat it) meat lovers I find to be very eliteist, please don't be put off by piss taking.

One thing I found to do when I started being a vegetarian was actually cooking for friends, funny thing was, I having never really liked meat could cook it better for them and once I did that (reluctantly but being a chef I had to cook meat anyway) I started just doing vegetarian dishses and turned 2 of them vegetarian as I proved it wasn't a thing of taste, just a thing they'd been brought up to think it and to be honest, what does eating an animal prove (especially when most meat lovers own dogs I find...)

Please stick to healthy eating, you'll feel better for it and what has peer pressure got to do with eating anyway, your eating what you enjoy, not what someone else enjoys, if they have a crappy pallette and a failing heart and weigh 2 stone more, I am pretty sure you have the last laugh.

Fresh food is also good because it has so many possibilities and flavours, not bound by a certain base that people are scared to try out of... Fresh food helped me get into cooking when I was young, it has alot more possibilities than roasting, frying or grilling...

If I had more time, i'd give a better arguement (it's late at night) but I hope you don't give up on eating a better way and try getting into cooking if you aren't and get your friends to taste that it can be nice! have a night with beers and food.

Hehe. Thanks. :thumb:

For the record, I'm not an organic food snob or anything... it's just it seems to be more consistently... good. And I'll only buy if it's only slightly more expensive. It often is, with the health food craze going on.

I'm gonna go eat some crap that's gonna make me feel terrible... because there's nothing else here.

Also, I think it's kinda amazing that people seem to think they can cancel out the effects of this food by exercising... all the running in the world isn't going to add nutrition to a Pop Tart, ya know?

I know what you mean. It can be a bit hard. For me it's a different case, though. It's more so that if I am anywhere but my house it's hard to find the things I consider healthy at say an average convenient store or something like that. Of course, there's always grocery stores, but they often have outrageous prices for anything worth eating.

On the other hand, I guess I did sort of catch some flack when I went vegetarian. I mean, I pretty much was anyway, but then I stepped it up a notch and stopped eating any meat and NO fast food. Then again, I had reasons that had nothing to do with any kind of agenda, so most people saw nothing wrong with it. I wasn't preaching anything, and those that know why see the logic. /End random babble...

Stick to it. In the long run, it's going to be better for you to keep doing what you want to do. You'll sleep better, your mood will be better, if you're an athlete your performance will benefit greatly... it's just a better way to live. It's a tragic, and I mean FUCKING TRAGIC state of affairs in this country when the obesity rate is something like 60% and then, to top it off, these same couch potato bastards harass people like you and I about the fact that we'd prefer a damn fruit cup or what have you over the extra large fries. At least we don't have to fit into the group when everyone makes fun of "double-wide America" (all puns intended). /End bloody-fisted rant

Good luck. :thumb:

Oh I wasn't trying to preach vegetarianism in anyyyy way, I just found it opened me to cooking a bit as it was something you had to do more... plus alot of people started to respect me for sticking to it ( as a side note)

And eating healthy is never hard even in corner shops, just have to be very picky lol.

But healthy eating tastes good, making food yourself or properly, means you eat how you want, stay healthy and also don't just do what people think you should, breaking that "mould" is a good thing to do in any situation... (then again I am drunk so... lol, my answers will be more concise tommorow)

I was just being silly. But now I learned something. Damn.

In all honesty, I, too, try hard to eat healthy. But that's because I have strange stomach issues. My strange stomach issues also keep me at a scrawny 6'1, 135 lbs.

I love me some jersey tomatoes :]

You guys are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I'm not gonna argue with any of you. But I think some of you may be overstating things a bit as far as meat being unhealthy. I eat meat with probably at least half of my meals, but its not because I've been conditioned to do it or I'm bowing to peer pressure. Its that I consider (SOME) meat dishes to be so incredibly delicious, that there is really no way to beat it (for me). When I have a good prime strip or ribeye, or a thick veal chop (PLEASE LET'S NOT ARGUE THE ETHICS OF THIS), the meat is so fucking incredibly tasty that its almost orgasmic. And I never feel shitty or sick afterwards, unless I've over-eaten (which a LOT of people do).

I'm not close-minded to vegetarianism. My high school girlfriend of two and a half years was a vegetarian (which meant I was too, whenever we ate together) so I've been exposed to a ton of different vegetarian dishes. A few of them I've even incorporated into my current diet as well (spinach dishes, grilled portabello mushrooms, uhhhhsdhhsdhfhsdfhs god damn they're good). I would never give someone shit about their diet. One of my best friends is vegan, and we're totally cool with each other, even when we go out and have dinner together. I just can't give up some of the dishes that are my favorites, and believe me, I've tried.

I don't think my current diet is unhealthy though, which I guess is my main point. red meat =/= unhealthy

(still drunk at this point) But meat is not unhealthy, especially if properly cooked (it can be given great appreciation in the kitchen). Being vegetarian or eating certain meats does not segregate unless you make it, go for it, I could put my point accross as equally as you could yours, my brother is vegan, do I wannna follow that, fuck No, I love cheese and eggs lol. All in the person and nothing makes you a different or bad person, just never take pressure from those who do not understand food... that is when I do find it offensive.

JUst to clarify, most of my rant was regarding fast food meat. I mean, can anyone really deny that that shit is bad for you? There's absolutely nothing wrong with some grilled chicken breast, that good ol' Thanksgiving turkey or the occasional ham sandwich. As long as it's not some processed, fake, deep-fried-cheese-covered crap, there are definitely many benefits to meat.

although i would like to slowly transition to a non-strict meatless vegetarian diet, i think exercise & a well-balanced diet is important overall. today i ate chocolate ice-cream & watermelon & drank cola and coffee. meatless? yes. healthy? well, not exactly. yesterday, i had BLT's & fried plantains & i feel that was the more healthier well-balanced diet IMO.

i think in Argentina their cows are grass fed & they have way lower rates of heart disease.
