Korg just got a little baffling

Their new Volca is a kick drum synth. Seemingly all analog, it actually sounds really cool? I never would have expected them to do a Vermona Kick Lancet/Jomox MBase competitor, but here it is, and from the one demo i am sorta pumped on it. My room mate has the Volca Bass and it's a sweet little thing, but this and the Volca FM are the first two that i've actually been like, "Damn, eventually, maybe."

And then they announced an ARP Odyssey module (no keys) which is... a better price point than what they announced the keyboard version at. And it's a fucking Odyssey. And the mk1 white with colored sliders is gorgeous. Y'all gonna synth nerd with me?

I like the idea of the kick synth. Volca's are getting more appealing by the day....Have had the keys for a few years and really like it, but the bass and beats never appealed to me. I played an FM in a shop a few months ago it blew me away, and this looks real nice.....sound reminds me of a 909 a bit?

Odyssey would probably be fun, I won't be buying one though.

It's more of an aggressive bass synth that can do kicks, from my hat I've read. :idk: Looks really cool though!

I'm all about that ARP, such a lovely machine. I got to play with one of the reissues at an Ishibashi in Japan with a Minilogue hooked up right above it. Tons of fun until my friends pulled me away (as is standard tradition in multiple countries now)

The kick synth could make nice companion to my Volca Sampler. Intriguing.

The pattern chain function lets users connect multiple sequence patterns for successive playback, making it possible to construct large-scale developments of 32, 64, or even 256 steps by joining up to 16 sequences.
& it has a swing control. Dope.

I've been ambivalent about Volcas. Demo units in stores left me underwhelmed in terms of sound.
Demoes and jam sessions I've watched on yt were much more satisfying, but still lacking in that extra *something* I look for in synths. A sonic signature, character even. Where nothing sounds preset-ish. The MS20 has that. Most anything Moog has it. Oberheim, yup. Sequential and so on. The Volcas...not so much. On their own, chained & going direct into basic mixers anyway. They strike me as the kind of boxes to really benefit from a quality channel strip's preamp, eq, filters etc. Gamechanger difference.
This might be the first one I pick up. Will have to check one out beforehand to get a better idea of the decay range.

Both ARPs look lovely

The Odyssey looks great. Psyched to see it sans mini keys.

I almost always prefer black color configs, but that silver version looks pretty excellent

I'm fuckin stoked on the Volca Kick. I thought the original volcas were neat, but the Sample was a step towards badass, FM is part of a wave of synths that I think are the future of interesting synth development, and now the Kick just sounds sick. Hell yeah Korg!

I'm the other way, Moogs always sound like a 'moog' preset to me, and they've been getting worse at doing that as time goes on. Oberheim's and Sequential have never been my bag either, especially the newer Oberheim it just sounds like a neat digital synth to me? I don't think I've ever owned a synth that didn't benefit from a decent preamp/eq/filter/compressor, except maybe the Korg m500, and that's just because it sounds old and that's it's charm.

I like the Volcas because I feel like I'm getting the absolute maximum bang for my buck, probably because I've switched to spending all my pennies on pedals now instead of synths :animal:
