I was getting ready to shit on this because of the awful production. Looks like theyre trying to go for that "raw", "live" style that atmospheric bands really dont need to be fucking with... But the song is still pretty good.

What mean raw...live... like a nice-attempt-at-Steve-Albini sound? The drums are all wrong for that.
Vox levels sound about right...even in the skramz...but yeah this sounds like the techniques used don't suit the song. At all.
You're right tho, the song is pretty good. Def sounds like the type to get better with additional listens and utterly crush when performed live.

Hmmmm it's different. It sounds kinds of Mew-y.

I'm into it.

(I like the production but I've also never listened to this band before. Sounds kinda like ISIS.)

Les Voyages de l'Âme

When you feel like Falls of Rauros put this on. Not that they have anything in common, but you can't just be in any frame of mind and listen to it.

Whereas falls makes you think of Tolkien and the forest, Alcest makes you think of a late summer sunset, when you are happy because it's a beautiful sunset but you know that the summer is gone.

Then go backwards and forwards in their discography from that album.

Reminds me of their earlier work, though more intricate in terms of riffing. Speaking of this particular metal subgenre, I wonder if Les Discrets will ever release any new material.

You mean like this brand new track they just released?

Thanks for the heads up. Seems they're continuing down the path established on Ariettes ooubliées and are now incorporating trip hop elements. I hope the remainder of the next album is more varied than the teaser track and has some heavier drone moments like Septembre et Ses Dernières Pensées. My comprehension of the French language is pretty limited, but I enjoy bands like Alcest and Les Discrets a great deal. They were the only decent bands in a similar vein to clean-vocal-era Katatnoia I was able to find for a number of years.

Discouraged Ones was actually the first album of theirs I discovered (around the time it was first released/promoted by Century Media). When I noticed Jonas Renske wearing a Slowdive shirt in band photo, I figured their music would incorporate unique influences (for the time the album was released). I've enjoyed all Katatonia albums since Discouraged Ones other than their most recent release, which is beginning to seem more formulaic and less innovative. Maybe I just need to give it a few more listens.
