DD-5 vs DD-20 in terms of sound

DD-5 is my fav, but I wanted another/additional digital delay that has a similar sound and clarity. Can the DD-20 achieve this?

I think the dd-5 sounds way better than the dd-20. Dd-20 was kinda boring and non-distinct to me and the dd-5 had more character. I really like the way dd-2/dsd-2 sounds just as a delay. Maxon/ibanez are always good for a look too.

For the digital delay sound nothing beats the Boss DD-2, DD-3, DSD-2, DSD-3 or DD-5 in my opinion.
The DD-2, DD-3 and DD-5 have the weird hold / glitch function, with the DD-2 and DD-3 you can even mangle the time knob while on hold.
The DD-5 has a beautiful reverse mode.
The DSD-2 and DSD-3 have the weird sample / trigger mode and input where you can get some pretty crazy results.
They all have this special pleasantly strange boxy metallic sound that is great on infinite repeats and / or when you use very short delay times to get some combfilter / sitar type sounds.

Ya, dd-5 hold is the best. I had a dd-2 but sold it cause I needed the money. I may get another. Is there much difference in sound between the dd-3 and dd-2?

Original dd-3s are identical to dd-2, but they changed the chip at some point. I don't like the more modern dd-3 sound as much as the dd-2/dsd-2 (same long chip, just no hold and instead trigger which can get weird). I love the straight repeat sound of the chip though. For some reason the current dd-3 just sounds more muddy or less cutting to me.

For a cheap one, I thought the eleca edd-2 digital delay sounded great. I liked the character for ~$30 shipped with tax.

I'm not huge on either one really having character (have a DD-20, but it's a specialty piece for the times I want 10-20s of delay in one unit). They don't sound bad, they're just "this is a delay pedal", which is what they're really for.

Talk to me about that... How different can it be from the rest DDs?

DD-5 delay is awesome. What's different about the reverse?

1. Cannot remove the dry sound. That may be a limitation but I love it. The LEVEL knob controls only the delayed sound
2. On reverse mode only, time can can be warped, to pitch, with the time knob. Infinite delay in reverse mode will let you play your sustained note forever, just twisting the time knob back and forth. Oddly, it does not warp the same way in any traditional (forward) delay settings

I like leaving it on almost infinite delay, really low in the mix, all the time. Gives a nice swimmy feel.

I also have a DD-6. Exactly opposite of the DD-5, the time bending does NOT work in reverse mode, but it does work in traditional modes. Bit of a longer delay time, and the sample/hold is good because it can glitch like the DD-5, but you can also loop on top of it. You can't do this with DD-5. Ultimately, DD-5 is still my favorite but that's in part because I've had it for 20 years.

For both of these DDs, the sample/hold is the best feature. DD-5 is shorter hold time, DD-6 long (the DD2 and 3 are very short but still cool)

Warp mode on DD-6 doesn't get enough love. I love my DD-6 so much.

I recently rehoused a guy's dd-5 with Analog man mods and I have the dry cut mod if another wants it. I might just get another dd-5 and have two.

Hell yeah.
