No unnecessary extra controls, I'm just after a solidly built, great sounding clone.
I'm leaning towards the North Effects Primitive, but I'd like to see what you guys recommend.

I kind of wanted one that I could just order and it'd be here within a week, but wasn't an EHX. With the cost of getting it over here, I could approach a UK-based builder and the price would probably end up similar to a Creepy Fingers one (although his circuits are artfully tidy).

I'm sure Ian at Ghost Effects can build you up a nice FZ-1.
Chicago Stompworks builds an FZ-1 clone:

They're cheap, but I've never played one. So, I can't tell you how they sound. I've got one of their Green Ringer clones, but there's a world of difference between building a Green Ringer and an FZ-1.

Smitty pedals also makes a very close sounding to an original clone, pretty sure it was cheaper than Brad's builds too if money is a major factor. On the vintage side of things, those Sekova Model No.59 japanese clones of the FZ1 sound awesome if not quite exact sonic clones. I'm pretty sure I scored those for under $150, but you know how the vintage market goes.

Any experience with these?

I've read one person say that they do (or did) use op-amps in one of their tonebenders but maybe it's to do with getting the power supply to play nicely with 9v PSUs? I dunno, I wish I knew more about the technical side of pedals coz then I'd just build and tweak whatever fuzz I'm gassing for.

Ahh shit... seems all the good ones run on 1xAA battery, no LED.
Is there anything that does similar tones but in a more pedalboard-friendly unit? I'm not bothered about size though...

The Carcosa is based on the FZ-1S circuit. So, not really the same thing.
