Need speaker suggestions...

I'm considering rehousing my Blackstar HT-1. I like the simplicity of this amplifier and it's great for bedroom volumes. I think I'd prefer a 12" speaker, though.

The challenge with speaker selection is that I play guitar and my bass VI through this.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm no expert either, I just know that just like with fuzz boxes, it all depends on taste and personal preference, and it's always hard to describe the tone -let alone feel- of a speaker in way that makes perfect sense to you...:idk:

So far for the disclaimer :)

Fwiw, I gave up swapping speakers after finding out that V30s don't deserve their bad reputation at all. As long as you feed em lots of voume and enough dirt, they're great for guitar as well as baritone. So I'd assume with the right amp, a bass VI should work fine too :idk:

I actually put a pair of G12H30's and a pair of V30s in my cab. I don't really buy into sales pitches that are supposed to market a certain new speaker as being "doom oriented", or "perfect for low tunings" or whatever. I still think the best guitar tones -no matter what genre- were born in the 60s and 70s, when everyone and their mother was using the same 6 or 7 types of speakers. Just like the countless tubescreamer or muff reissues, it's imo pointless to try to re-invent the wheel :idk:

Having said all that...The holy grail for me when it comes to perfectly balanced 12" speakers that work for pretty much anything...The vintage Fanes that came in my '70s hiwatt cab. Which I sold like a dumbass

All totally valid points, but don't most guitar speakers not like frequencies much below 75 Hz? Looks like low E on bass is 41 Hz. I'm trying to understand the physics of it all. I can say that the 8" speaker in the combo doesn't seem to like the VI.

You are correct that many guitar speakers will be unhappy with bass frequencies (and could be damaged).

I'd recommend looking for a bass speaker with a good sounding, guitar-ish voicing (rather than a flat voiced speaker).

That said, with only 1W of power you're unlikely to be playing at a level which could damage a guitar speaker, so you could give it a shot. You may find your sound to be significantly lacking in bass frequencies, however.

You might want to include a simple passive highpass filter in your rehouse. You could use it when you're playing the Bass VI to cut some of the lower frequencies.

Know of anything optimized for 1 watt of power? I've looked around -- it's a weird space. Almost wonder if I'd have to ask Ted Weber to build something.

EVM12L does everything awesomely.

Re: 1 watt amps. You'll want a fairly efficient speaker. Around 100dB will give you plenty of punch.
