After a long day of packing for an upcoming move, I had an opportunity to plop down in front of my rig and plug in a lightly used Pelican Noiseworks Pelitaur that arrived in the mail today. I had been waiting to try one for quite a while, and was able to snag one affordably via a random sale on Reverb last weekend.
Outwardly, the Pelitaur resembles a well-known boutique overdrive pedal with mythical properties in a rather tongue-in-cheek manner, but the joke stops there. This pedal means business in the fuzziest manner possible with two blendable fuzz types on tap, one sputtery and the other muffish. The build quality seems solid and there is plenty of output on tap. Tonewise, it's kind of like a DOD FX76 Punkifier with a Big-Muff substituted for the DOD 250 side of its circuit and a much more interactive and complex EQ control.
During my first few hours with the pedal, I've gravitated more toward the sputtery end of the fuzz spectrum and was able to dial in fantastic horn-style lead tones with a crunchy edge and tinge of muffy girth. There are numerous sweet spots achievable with various gain and treble combinations given each fuzz type responds in an opposing and often complementary manner to the position of the treble knob. I was impressed by the amount of clarity possible with complex chords using some pretty gnarly sounding settings (hence the aforementioned DOD Punkifier comparison).
I haven't removed the backplate to tinker with its internal trimpots as of yet and may never bother, as the current settings meet my creative needs. The Pelitaur didn't immediately wow me, but progressively inspired a stupid grin the more I tinkered and noodled. It will have a place on my board for quite some time and may eventually replace my Holowon Static Egg for horn-style tones.
