i love growing my own veggies. a lot.
i'm a cheater w/ starters instead of seeds, but am totally pumped about plantin' tomorrow.


six different tomatoes (junkie, funny since i hated them growing up), two lettuces, jalapenos, a couple bells, a couple herbs (rosemary & oregano, already have cilantro coming back annually).
hoping to find spinach and red onions.
then hopully cutting myself off.

not taking on corn this year. nor 'taters. probably nor banana peppers since i only like them when they've been pickled...
brussel sprouts didn't do well last year... tempting to try again, but probably not this time.

am sure i'll think of something else yet.


(yes i've been vegetarian (technically pescetarian) for almost 12 years now.)

(didn't mean pot but if you are, more power to ya. should be allowed to IMO. and i don't smoke it.)

They're pretty tricky to grow here, but I managed to grow some cherry tomatoes and some chili's over a couple of years. Don't recall the strains/type at this moment. Unfortunately, both plants died while I was on vacation last summer.





I always have fresh herbs in the kitchen, but I miss growing veggies. I want to get back into it though. It's very soothing work, taking care of plants.

That 'mato looks like a butt.

I wonder if I could put some tiny plants on my balcony...problem is it faces due east so it would only have part of a day of direct sunlight.

Those are two 'matos forming a butt. So, they're basically butt cheeks

You know seeds aren't that hard, but you have to start with some easy ones. I've planted Green Beans about three weeks ago and i already have the plants growing up crazy - I have to say that, in the last weeks, climate has been perfect for growing: long days of sun and rain once every two or three days.
On the other hand i have used starters for eggplants and zucchini, hope they grow up well because it's a part of the backyard i dug and manured this year for the first time.
They seem to go slow but it's quite early, i usually plant them around mid-april, but this time i did it 3 weeks before because i thought the weather was perfect.

It really depends on the kind of plants and the average temparuture.
I've got the same situation on my balcony but sage and rosemary grow all year without problems and i alway have two or three basil plants from late march to september (you know, for some good homemade italian pesto )

OH YEAH. I've got tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, habanero peppers, cilantro and red peppers plants in the ground.
Herb garden has rosemary, oregano, thyme and basil.

I started seeds for yellow squash and cucumbers, those will be ready to plant soon. I took out my hops though--no room for those bastards.

Oh and we have a local guy who is an heirloom tomato guru. I didn't buy any plants from him this year, but he's always really cool varieties of tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos and eggplants at the farmers market. http://www.craiglehoullier.com/

We put in a raised bed last spring, worked pretty well, we do tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, a few types of peppers and usually carrots, we also have a strawberry patch and do pumpkins for the fall.

Kids love it and we get tons of good stuff,
We do roasted sauce with the tomatoes and other veggies, and last year I think I froze about 3 extra gallons of sauces from the garden.

My wife and I have had an 8 x 4 raised garden bed for about 7 years now. We always grow basil, rosemary, oregano, dill, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, jalapenos and some sort of hot chili pepper. In past years, I usually grew cayenne pepper to make my own hot sauce. Last year, none of the local stores had cayenne, so I grew tabasco peppers instead. I have to say, I loved the sauce I got from the tabasco peppers even more than my old cayennes. I think I'll go with the tabasco again this year. We've also decided to build another 8 x 4 garden box for this year, since we have the space in our yard. So we'll be expanding our garden by quite a bit. I'm not even sure what we're going to grow this time, but we'll have the room to try whatever the hell we want. My wife wants to try growing eggplant.

Oh I also forgot to mention that I grew my own hop vines for about 5 years. 8 vines, 4 different varieties. But they didn't grow well because I didn't have a trellis that was tall enough for them, hops like to grow to 25-30 feet. I ended up digging up the rhizomes and giving them to a friend of mine who has a trellis already set up to handle those kinds of heights.

YES! I have a pretty big garden and I generally grow a few rows of green beans, peas, asparagus, kale, potatoes, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini and eggplant. I also have a raised bed of strawberries, 2 of raspberries and a few blueberry plants. Then I have a herb garden and a bunch of flowers in the front.

It is my favorite thing every year. Since we are in Wisconsin, I haven't really started to grow much yet. Just my asparagus and rhubarb so far. I'll get peas in this weekend!

weather here in the midwest of USA is what tends to be tricky about seeds. it's almost may and for all we know it might snow next week.
